The remnants of Storm Erin appear to be about half-way accross the Atlantic with slower winds, lower temperatures and a more diffuse appearance. I'm still hoping we in the UK do get some vigorous wet westerlies towards the end of next week. Rain is desperately needed.

We've had a hosepipe ban for about a month or so here in the East Midlands and yes, I dug a hole to put my new hydrangea in, shady spot but even there it was very dry. I've been getting exercise lugging watering cans about, foregoing showers, flushing loo less and postponing washing up.

Here in Cheshire we haven’t had a hose pipe ban so I’ve been lucky. I was out tonight and soaked the front lawn. Even so, go down more than an inch in the borders and the soil is bone dry. Infact it’s more like dust than soil.

A couple of years ago I started buying plants that were more drought resistant like succulents, hebes, heuchera...and fewer thirsty annuals, knowing this was coming. My Eng runner beans have been utterly kyboshed by the heat, 2 out of 10 seeds grew. I also lost all my goldfish due to water temps.

I was watching a programme a couple of weeks ago that said the same thing. That the warmer climates and shortage of water will put a strain on the traditional English garden. I’d go without showers though before I’d ever let my lawn go brown πŸ˜‰

It's slowed down and is still only about half-way accross...forecasts are a bit vague but rain/wind's expected end of next wk. Storm Fernand is forming already though, just off northern Florida.

Some of the trees round here are looking as if it's late autumn. Bring on a downpour or two...
