Not only is this not sci fi -- it is 100% possible with today's technology. And the MORAL of the story, in the end, is both that AI can be hijacked (think Elon Musk) and that you *can't* bring people back from the dead. In the short term, the audience could see and hear AI-generated Mascolo.
... Stefano and seems to respond like Stefano, more or less. Except sometimes it is wonky. And over time, maybe, the AI distorts Stefano's character more and more, and starts to recommend stuff that seems out of character. And maybe eventually we learn someone else has commandeered the AI.
In 2025, the way to tell this story is like "San Junipero" of Netflix's Black Mirror. The chip is almost irrelevant -- but you feed an AI his life story, his voice samples, lots of his images. (And the show makes a deal with Mascolo's heirs to do this). So they talk to computer that sounds like ...

Y&R introduced "room tone" for a while -- steady hum where you'd expect it -- and it was SO annoying. Meanwhile, Eastenders and Corrie regularly have a background cacaphony -- trains chugging by -- and I love it because it feels real there.

I'm sorry I'm all gushy about #GH, but yesterday's was a good example of how it excels. All soaps are talk-talk-talk, but when it happens on #GH it has emotion or energy. Martin-Tracy talking about Stella was nothing but exposition, but it CRACKLED.

#Emmerdale is continuing to re-embrace its identity as farm soap. Sheep-rustling shenanigans, showdowns in barns with pitchforks, serial killers with deer hunting bows and arrows. I also find John, Aaron and that isolated farmhouse truly chilling. What's behind the door??
A+ to a writing team that is embracing camp. Ava, Kristina and Alexis standing over Ric's "lifeless" body, not really giving a damn, was funny enough. Ric waking up in the basement with a ball gag in his mouth (who has that laying around?), getting payback for the panic room? Priceless! #GH 2/2
It is helpful coming to #GH with fresh eyes. Like, people hate Drew and how did we get here from Billy Miller, but -- since I'm less attached -- I love CamMath playing so dark and slimy. Same with KM's Kristina. She is playing *crazy* -- twitchy, insane, manipulative, and I love it. 1/2

Also, as a researcher on aging, the "easy tells" that many of us see may be harder for older adults. Beyond cognitive and perceptual challenges, there is evidence that -- either for generational reasons or as a side effect of aging -- people may become more trusting.
It is heavy on my mind that tomorrow marks the end of the initial 200 episode order. I am so grateful to Amazon for spending the millions of dollars to extend the show for another three months. This will be a difficult loss. #Neighbours.

Neighbours was never as eye-rolling as the American soaps.
No question Flynn and Braun are among the best in their field, and Y&R historically has been a quality show that could give them a great stage to play on. Unfortunately, writing wise, Y&R is not currently at its best.

5/5 To this last point, it shows how legacy soaps are somewhat hobbled by their seasoned casts. Emmerdale, Corrie (too much), Hollyoaks manage this by regularly rotating out people; Eastenders does too but brings folsk back for impact (Bianca!). Wish US soaps could rotate more.
4/5 Investing (buy low, sell high). #BTG #BeyondTheGates has started in a lower cost production area, done upfront investment in sets, and hired newer soap-unfamiliar cast members -- giving them time to grow. And it has paid off. The soap gets stronger weak by weak.
3/5 Rehearsal. The US soaps have become so fast, actors are doing the best they can with the rush. Actors who used to COMMAND emotions now struggle to do more than read their lines. The US soaps would really do well to figure out slowing down a bit
2/5 Production values. UK soaps are leaders in their indoor & outdoor sets. Today #Neighbours showed how you can follow a camera from Lassiters lobby to piano bar to spa. It gives a set realism and depth. Here's hoping #BoldAndBeautiful uses many handhelds on its new fixed sets.

Billy Flynn did this thing where his eyes teared up, and his sadness was *right* there, and despite herself Lily felt some compassion. He is a STAR, his Cane is welcome (despite the plot), and I think #Lane 2.0 has a shot at greatness. #YR

So, here's the thing: Everyone from Tristan Rogers to Glen Powell got employment stateside. Translation: For the right price, your Matty could be imported to a US soap to turn the world on with a smile. Unfortunately, as you note, it's unlikely he'd be used correctly.

The actor and the show have *really* committed to the bit of making Drew the most hated man in Port Charles. And while we'll probably get some deus ex machina explanation for the change (e.g., Shiloh), and a whodunit, what an AWESOME hateful villain. #GH #GeneralHospital
I loved Billy Miller (esp on Y&R), and I know people hate this Drew, among other reasons, because they don't see how we got from that character to this one. All true! But, putting that aside, I congratulate #GH #GeneralHospital for creating this awesome boo-hiss Snidely Whiplash
Nurses Ball, Gio + Michael, plus in general acting/production/stories/use of history was all much better than Y&R/B&B. I could barely look at my CBS soaps after seeing the level of craft on GH.

In the context that I am a newer lapsed viewer of General Hospital lately, the chemistry between Jason” and Britt is amazing. I can’t take my eyes off them. #GH.
Obrecht is going to be front and center in all of this, and if Paevey *is* playing Faison's memories inside Nathan's body, it's going to be such a mix of emotions for her. I find this all very exciting. #GH #GeneralHospital
This felt like a story pivot, like they were quickly moving to some new arc. The foundation for this story had been so slowly laid, the rapid evolution was surprising. But I think, too, maybe the show got network notes/feedback to pick up pacing?
Thing is, you look at these UK soaps, and they'll bring on new characters or whole families, and put them on the front burner and have them drive story from day 1, and it is terrific. It just adds excitement. So I think it's more about execution.
A thing we can do: Copy the photo, reply to the original post with praise and "I've added alt-text to this version", paste the photo and add the alt text on your copy. (I haven't actually done that, but your posts put that in my mind to do going forward)

Yeah, there is no defending the writing. But like on Wednesday, I watched Bergman and Flynn do a whole hour. And we know the story is garbage. But the dialog was quite good, and those two played off each other like stars. The scenes were crackling.
And you know what? I'm not mad about it. Jack said it yesterday -- he's basically be masquerading since Day 1 -- and Billy Flynn brings so much to the portrayal, I can't take my eyes off him.

ED had a high cringe factor, but they've gotten rid of most that problematic group or backburnered them. (And they got rid of one who *could* act, sigh)
It's clear how powerful the UK acting programs are in terms of nurturing young talent that is good from day one on soaps.
I kinda liked that Rhett and Aaron's daughters are forming kind of a tea party club. And I knew that it was much more than a hunch, that this group must somehow form a family. #Neighbours
It is interesting that no US soap anywhere (not even the newest one) is seriously trying for this kind of young cohort anymore. I guess Days comes closest, but not really. Why did they give up on next gen? Because that group will never watch soaps again? Even so, you need them to sustain the shows.
