My book club picked it last year and I bought it but then, when I knew I would miss that meeting, I never read it. So it’s been sitting on my shelf for a year. I’m glad I finally picked it up.

The problem with humor books is that as they go along the author has to get broader and broader and I generally lose patience with the plots. Interesting that Sandwich is getting a sequel, I didn’t think it needed one. The one I think you would really enjoy is The Narrow Land.

Different. But I’ve lived through so many people shipping them in the first book only to be disappointed. The way she writes you could ship L and P but still realize you could be wrong. (Of course the fact that there is only 1 1/4 books left makes it different. It reassures your hope.)
Mary Bannister (MaryB) (@maryb2004.bsky.social) reply parent
I love Danny. But there’s a line between a friend WANTING something to happen and it actually happening. She writes very realistic situations. I’ve had it happen where we friends all knew 2 people were perfect for each other but it took 2 years for the guy to realize it (and maybe he never would.)
Mary Bannister (MaryB) (@maryb2004.bsky.social) reply parent
Maybe. But I also think it’s how you look at the writing from a genre perspective. Is she primarily writing a romance (I say no, but many would disagree) or is she primarily concerned with writing a psychological study of a complicated man. The situational leadup does make him open to the moment.
Mary Bannister (MaryB) (@maryb2004.bsky.social) reply parent
There is a reality where all the preliminaries with her happen but he’s still not interested. DD showed that with Christian. To have it be inevitable that all the preliminaries inevitably lead to love is a romance novel trope and I think DD is writing a more complicated story.
Mary Bannister (MaryB) (@maryb2004.bsky.social) reply parent
Yes, and maybe that lays the groundwork but it isn’t until he is holding her and looking at her that it hits him and he’s interested. i don’t think he’s just admitting it at that moment, he’s REALIZING it, which is different.
Mary Bannister (MaryB) (@maryb2004.bsky.social) reply parent
Yes, possibly. But when AG first encounters him the P meeting hasn’t occurred yet. At that point he definitely isn’t interested. At all. He would have been happy if DC had lived and married her.

I should say that the first 2 times I read the series I had much more sympathy for him. Then someone pointed out how he doesn’t really want to allow her agency, he wants her “safely” on the pedestal he created where she makes no decisions, and I’ve never been able to unsee it.
Mary Bannister (MaryB) (@maryb2004.bsky.social) reply parent
I take away points for not heeding what P is telling him. At this point in the story he’s not too terribly bad but it’s the start of him not recognizing P’s own agency.

Could be that someone just pulled a form used before and rather than take the time to negotiate out unnecessary provisions they just left them in. It happens. Often. Especially when things are moving fast. Wonder what the agreement looked like when the govt. acquired AIG shares.
Mary Bannister (MaryB) (@maryb2004.bsky.social) reply parent
Interesting. Also possible the provisions are there so that if the stockholder DOES later acquire more shares there is no need for a whole new agreement.

This time through pay attention to how AG gradually becomes more and more controlling with P. Yes L treated him horribly but he wouldn’t have been the best match for P even if L hadn’t existed. He wanted her “safely” on a pedestal and she thrives on freedom.

Good 🧵 . I should say that I’ve always appreciated that my law school required 1Ls to take a statutory class. Ours was baby tax (individual income tax). Reading statutes is a very practical skill, especially for those of us with no interest in litigation.
