My book club picked it last year and I bought it but then, when I knew I would miss that meeting, I never read it. So it’s been sitting on my shelf for a year. I’m glad I finally picked it up.

The problem with humor books is that as they go along the author has to get broader and broader and I generally lose patience with the plots. Interesting that Sandwich is getting a sequel, I didn’t think it needed one. The one I think you would really enjoy is The Narrow Land.

Different. But I’ve lived through so many people shipping them in the first book only to be disappointed. The way she writes you could ship L and P but still realize you could be wrong. (Of course the fact that there is only 1 1/4 books left makes it different. It reassures your hope.)

I love Danny. But there’s a line between a friend WANTING something to happen and it actually happening. She writes very realistic situations. I’ve had it happen where we friends all knew 2 people were perfect for each other but it took 2 years for the guy to realize it (and maybe he never would.)

Profile picture Mary Bannister (MaryB) (@maryb2004.bsky.social) reply parent

Maybe. But I also think it’s how you look at the writing from a genre perspective. Is she primarily writing a romance (I say no, but many would disagree) or is she primarily concerned with writing a psychological study of a complicated man. The situational leadup does make him open to the moment.

There is a reality where all the preliminaries with her happen but he’s still not interested. DD showed that with Christian. To have it be inevitable that all the preliminaries inevitably lead to love is a romance novel trope and I think DD is writing a more complicated story.

Yes, and maybe that lays the groundwork but it isn’t until he is holding her and looking at her that it hits him and he’s interested. i don’t think he’s just admitting it at that moment, he’s REALIZING it, which is different.

I should say that the first 2 times I read the series I had much more sympathy for him. Then someone pointed out how he doesn’t really want to allow her agency, he wants her “safely” on the pedestal he created where she makes no decisions, and I’ve never been able to unsee it.

I take away points for not heeding what P is telling him. At this point in the story he’s not too terribly bad but it’s the start of him not recognizing P’s own agency.

Could be that someone just pulled a form used before and rather than take the time to negotiate out unnecessary provisions they just left them in. It happens. Often. Especially when things are moving fast. Wonder what the agreement looked like when the govt. acquired AIG shares.

Re-reading What’s Bred in the Bone by Robertson Davies.

IT WAS IN A GARDEN that Francis Cornish first became truly aware of himself as a creature observing a world apart from ware of himself as a creature observing a world apart from himself. He was almost three years old, and he was looking deep into a splendid red peony. He was greatly alive to himself (though he had not yet learned to think of himself as Francis and the peony, in its fashion, was also greatly alive to itself, and the two looked at each other from their very different egotisms with solemn self-confidence. The little boy nodded at the peony and the peony seemed to nod back. The little boy was neat, clean, and pretty. The peony was unchaste, dishevelled as peonies must be, and at the height of its beauty. It was a significant moment, for it was Francis's first conscious encounter with beauty-beauty that was to be the delight, the torment, and the bitterness of his life-but except for Francis himself, and perhaps the peony, nobody knew of it, or would have heeded if they had known. Every hour is filled with such moments. big with significance for someone.
