That is awesome!
That is awesome!
On the one hand, I love it. On the other hand, it's just more data the government has about you that can be hacked or worse.
This might explain why publishers are colluding to limit the number of digital copies public libraries currently have available for purchase.
Happy reading!!!
Brilliant!
Libraries have been using this for years but not all library software supports it. Such a valuable resource
Our library in PA is doing it also 🥰
I just recently noticed that also here in NJ too
That's neat!
Also, authors do get paid when you check out their books.
Libraries in Massachusetts do this too.
What a great idea.
What?!? I've not seen this before!!
If I actually counted up how much I saved we’d be in the millions, and that’s just in the last 20 years. Love my library! And I found out I can get books from another library in another state on my reader because they are “sister” libraries? If one doesn’t have it, the other might! ❤️
Mine does this too and I also love it! We (my toddler and I) average $100 each visit and that isn’t even counting audiobooks on Libby ♥️
Congratulations, you just screwed an author out of their royalties.
Thought I was the only one thinking that. I love libraries but also will spend what little disposable income I have to support writers, publishers and hopefully even bookstores.
Here is an oldie to remind people to protest safely. It also mocks birthday boy who wants another parade in homage to himself. I think it would be worth the drive to DC to be able to turn my back on his funeral procession. Maybe "Good Riddance" on the back of a t shirt. youtu.be/HSvQT-tkiBw?...
I wish mine would tell me this!
That’s so cool. I’ve saved a ton on digital and audio books.
Librarians rule!
This is so neat
That is wonderful! Congratulations!
Brilliant!
book sales generate new author manuscript sales... there's room for both🤗
I noticed that our libraries are doing that too. Going to be sure to check out something at the end of the year so I get a total.
Our library does that! I started reading to my granddaughter on FaceTime every day at the beginning of the pandemic when she was 3 years old. In the next three years, we read over $30,000 worth of books, according to my library receipt!
That is awesome! 👏
Libby Libby Libby Libby Libby Libby! :)
This is a great idea!!
I need my library to do this.
Great idea! Though can it factor in my inevitable late fees when someone moves my stack from the coffee table? 🤔
damn im jealous of your library lol
This is extraordinary🌻
St. Louis County Library does this also! Pretty cool!
May be an IL library system thing because my library down near STL also does this!
I think this is a Libby thing. Love it.
That’s not factoring in the sanity it saves, too.
The library is so great.
Wow I think I saved $200 my trip last week and another $80 yesterday I love books and have run out of room
I love libraries! I’m get most of my audiobooks from CPL. Libby one good thing technology has given us.
@cityofsydney.bsky.social do this!
I’m a fan! Would love to see this while checking out from the library
When he's dead...let's all meet at the closest library
I introduced my daughter to the public library around 6 years old. When she found out how many books she could take out for "free" to read and get more when she returned the ones she read, it was like she won the lottery.
My library recently switched over to a system that tracks this, it gets printed on your receipt when you check out books. Now it's like a challenge to rack up the highest possible number. 😂
if you enjoy reading or listening to music, books or podcasts you can get the free app from your library and not pay for your books or audio anything. I use LIBBY and HOOPLA totally free and it's through your Public Library,
They should also note the cubic space in your home that isn't piles of books because you returned them.
Exactly! That’s why I always use the library! I use Libby now to download to my kindle and/ or phone. They have thousands of books!
I just discovered Libby this year. Today, while listening to an audio book with the Libby App, a saw a truck with the Libby logo and felt like going over there to thank them.
County Libraries are one of the few things I miss about the USA. Costa Rica has no equivalent except universities.
I would be interested in seeing my total since I started using my library. There was a time where it got too expensive to go to the library...because my dog liked to shred books. Kip was a fantastic paper shredder. 🤣
That's a really good reminder and shows what a valuable public investment public libraries are.
I hope mine will start doing that. Gotta get them all! (Books I mean)
I get that at my library (Hoboken, NJ).with each checkout. A great reminder! ❤️
The Joliet Library does this also
I love this. You should see if your library has access to Kanopy.com. Free streaming of films and docs with your library card. You can add to that total.
Great idea! I wish our county would do the same. 😊
I'm curious: do you check out paper books from the library or use an e-reader? My wife is a big fan of the Libby app, but she misses the feel of paper.
Paper books unless I’m listening via Libby on a long road trip
I get those from my library too. Just so very smart. Libraries are the best!
I love libraries! Take my grandkid there twice a month as well!
That’s pretty cool! Great idea!
Libraries are under attack. They're letting you know how expensive it will be to read without them...
📕 💰
That is so amazing. I cannot even imagine how much mine would be. I could never afford my reading habit.
Never hurts for the library to point out how much money they save you 🙂
Chicago Libraries are the bomb. You can even check out passes to the Museums. 😍
Clever!
Our library has been using this for quite a while and our patrons love it. Libraries are very valuable.
Well, Pritzker. !
And no books were burned...
That’s smart! Libraries are the way to go… check it out!
I love this idea. I listen to audiobooks all the time — maybe 100 a year, and download them from the library. I’m feeling quite smug at the moment.
Currently saving $28 by reading “Question 7” from Richard Flanagan, checked out from Orange County Library System. ✌️💙📚
Mine will say, you saved $1k+ this year. Stop checking out audiobooks unless you are sure you will listen to them, lol
Cool
Our library does the same. I love seeing all the books I've read over the years. God save the library for the library will save us all.
My library stopped late fees and so now I tend to keep books out past the due date&I I feel kind of bad about it. Most of the time.
But I finish them!
I know, right? I'm working my way thru the new bio of William F. Buckley Jr. (I KNOW, he's worse than I thought he was) and since it's new there are holds on it so I can't renew it. The book is REALLY good, worth a look. www.amazon.com/Buckley-Life...
Tanenhaus’ book on Whittaker Chambers was good, too.
Interesting. I have the Reagan book by Max Boot in my queue, but at 880 pgs, I keep skipping it. Reading Emily Dickinson’s Letters in the smallest font I’ve ever seen in a book, 500 pages, and because it’s ED there’s little to no punctuation!!! Thankfully, no one is waiting for me to finish.
Two authors I really like are Garrett Graff who does oral histories of things like D-Day & the Atomic bomb and Patrick Radden Keefe who wrote Empire of Pain the ONLY book I've ever had to put down and take a walk cause I was so upset over what I was reading. The Sackler family is the absolute
fucking WORST. They all need to be chained to fire hydrants so people can walk by and spit in their faces. But it is still a GREAT book, you just may need to take some breaks now and then and pet a dog or cat.
Yes—I’ve read a few by Radden Keefe. “Rogues” and “Say Nothing” also very good. Think my favorites in the non-fiction category are Michael Lewis, Isabel Wilkerson, and Lawrence Wright.
Not familiar with Graff as an author, but I recognize him from TV. 🤪
I got into Graff clicking on C-Span 3 one afternoon and there he was blathering on about UFOs. OK, not blathering, but it pulled me in. His book was an interesting contrast to another of my fav authors Annie Wilkinson, whose most recent Nuclear War: A Scenario has left me unsettled.
Lawrence Wright hmmm... This turned up on Amazon. www.amazon.com/dp/163424454...
@libarbarian.bsky.social and @feistywaters.com , have you seen this? I know you’ve retired Peter, but I’m sure you still know people.
Hey, I only just retired 3 hours ago! We tried this years ago at SAPL but ended it for some reason. I'm not the biggest fan as it focuses entirely on the materials borrowed and doesn't acknowledge all the other value one gets from library use. Yes, perhaps slicing hairs.
Happy retirement!!!
Good point. It was an idea I’d never seen before, and I thought it was neat. Lay people, Man! Jump on every shiny object.
A very good idea for all libraries to adopt!
One.of the few reasons I'm proud to pay my taxes
Our library has been doing this for years! Love it!
My library does that too! ❤️
I use Anna’s Archive!
Many libraries have been doing that for years. Unfortunately, one paid attention until now when we are losing so much thanks to maga voters & politicians.
Shoot, we've had free trips to our local zoo and science center through our library.
When I worked in downtown Philly my regular visit to the Free Library of Philadelphia was a highlight of my week. But don't forget --support the authors too and cough up the actual $$ to own their books outright.
They get paid when you use the library too (at least with e-books)
Ah--but I love a real book in my hands. I don't need much but I need my books. ☺️
Wow
This should motivate library lovers to donate whatever they can to their local library.
Very cool!
Libraries, what an amazing resource... reading what a wonderful peaceful experience, just you and your imagination. And yes recently I realised just how much I saved by using public libraries... ebooks and physical books... I should have joined years ago..
Hey, OCLS Florida, If any Orange County Library employees see this, consider it in the suggestion box. 👆🏾
My library in Virginia has been doing this for a few years, and I love it!
Libraries are the bomb.
Fabulous idea.
😎
I must be a billionaire as much as I’ve used CPL📚📚📖🤓
It’s a wonder we still have libraries. They are lifelines to precious humanity and need to be protected 🦋
Excellent!
That’s pretty cool for them to do.
I have the same statement on my receipt from my small town library in NC ☺️
Our’s does this St Louis and it’s fantastic. My librarian always asks me how much I think I saved at check out so it’s like this little mini game we play.
My library does that too - it's a very nice thing.
Our library does that too! So Cool Mine carries garden seeds too which was a huge surprise I got my card in 🇨🇦on inauguration day, when I shut down meta 🫠
