I feel like elaborating on this a bit. It can be popular in certain circles to say 5e is objectively bad and I don't want to align myself with that. I like 5e but that doesn't mean I can't criticise it. My reasons for liking 5e are that I've had years of fun playing it with friends
and god I wish they would've just gone whole hog on 5e as a combat system before anything else. I promise I like playing dnd really.
- when in real life, being bad at exams isn't that same as lacking common sense or being 'stupid'. It also reeks of abelism. Though this isn't the fault of a game system, games like 5e do (perhaps unintentionally) perpetuate this. Maybe I just have had worse experiences with this than the average
Like with STR and DEX, I've found myself brushing up against these weird contradictions on a semi-regular basis. I also find it a bit gross how something with low INT is often regarded as 'stupid' or lacking common sense (in my experience at least)-
individual intellegence. But, because of the way Ability Scores work in 5e, they can be treated as completely seperate. So I can be really good at using Survival to live in the wild, but my INT is so low that my Nature skill is useless?
dnd's interpretation of intellegence, represented with the INT Ability, is cognitive function and academic ability and WIS is more about lived experience and intuition (as well as perception for some reason). In the real world, these would just be two or three sides of the undefined shape which is-
... character's ability scores to inform the character's personality and apearence, and that requires just a little bit of grounding in realism to make a character relatable. This is also why I take issue with INT and WIS, as these are two different version of what could be called intellegence irl
You could say that expecting a game about magic and dragons requires suspension of disbelief, and asking that it's representation of physical abilities to be more realistic is contrary to playing a fantasy game. I would argue that (in my experience) many people use their ... (cont)
I'm not a big fan of the way abilities and skills are made to be interpreted. My biggest issue is with INT but I also hate that a character can have 6 STR but 20 DEX. Like my Rogue's muscles are basically atrophied, but they can have +9 to Acrobatics at level 1?
and I'm not a huge hater of 5e. I've had a lot of good times playing it, I've played it for nearly 10 years. There are just a lot of little things I don't like about the system that add up to being a lot. It's never surprised me that just about every table has some rules that they change
