I will note that in every single cycle of ppl bitching about the (relatively short, not at all uniform, & scattershot) school closures, not once has "well how did teachers feel about closures" bc asking that would a) blow up quite a few narratives & b) treat teachers as if they mattered in this

Chris Van Hollen is interesting because he makes a center-left case for Palestine. He argues for Palestinian rights not on leftist but on liberal grounds. It is highly philosophically coherent to do that, and yet few politicians do.

I'm sorry but this is insane www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news...

For roughly four years, survivors of Japanese American incarceration during World War II and their descendants have fought against the Lava Ridge Wind Project. They argued the 231-turbine development would desecrate the land where roughly 13,000 people of Japanese descent were imprisoned. Their forced removal and incarceration is now widely viewed as a blatant violation of civil rights. The Lava Ridge Wind Project, which was being developed by LS Power, a subsidiary of Magic Valley Energy, was approved in December 2024. The approval was part of an effort under the Biden administration to expand renewable energy projects on federal lands. The closest turbine to the historic site would be about 9 miles away. Wind turbines as tall as the Space Needle would mar the horizon, said Abo, who was 2 years old when she and her family were forced to move from their home in Juneau, Alaska, to the camp in 1942. The planned wind farm “just didn’t fit with the solemnity of the location,” she said.

Lately, whenever the topic of the major wrestling promotions (especially WWE) needing to provide much greater travel support and security services to female talent comes up, I think of Ashley Massaro explaining in her November 2017 affidavit just how dangerous it got for her and other women in WWE.

It eventually became painfully obvious that I was being treated as an independent contractor because I was forced to spend approximately $55,000 per year on rental cars and hotels since WWE only paid for our flights. This was unfair as we were in reality employees and these expenses should have been reimbursed. Even if one takes the opposite position, we should have at least had assistance from WWE in making reservations. One night, I was making a very long drive with Jillian Hall to get to a show and we were in the middle of nowhere. Jillian had booked the only hotel in the area and it ended up being connected to a strip club. Jillian was still in her stage clothes; I observed some men throwing beer bottles in the parking lot and wanted to just leave immediately; but there were no other hotels in the area so she proceeded to take the keys through a window and drive around to the back of the motel where the entrance to our room was. We were immediately barricaded by three large vehicles so we could not move the car in any direction and the men in the vehicles got out of their cars and started banging on the car windows. I laid on the horn for at least a full minute before a motel employee finally came out and the men returned to their vehicles and drove off. We drove off once we were certain they were not able to follow us to look for another hotel. WWE plays up the sex appeal of the Divas. We were sometimes forced to hit the road to get to the next show without even having time to change, as Jillian was that night. Sometimes, WWE did not want to pay for our flights so we had to rent cars and take very long drives and sometimes it was through the middle of nowhere. We were constantly traveling, so we did not have time to make sure every hotel we book is going to be perfectly safe. WWE should not send scantily clad female performers on long drives through the middle of nowhere late at night and not provide them with a safe place to stay or a safe method of transportation.

This is how I recall it going down, Snowden's reaction certainly seemed a little surprised

The funniest thing about the Snowden Saga was him loudly proclaiming that Russia wasn’t going to invade in Ukraine *while in Russia* then 6 months later popping out of his bunker to be like, “hey who amongst us hasn’t been wrong about Russian imperial projects”

There exists no way to suggest the troops might be The Bad Guys in acceptable political discourse. Therefore the media must reason its way backwards to the desired outcome.

“They call it the friend-enemy distinction, folks. Big, strong men would come up to him with tears in their eyes and ask Herr Schmitt, what if I just want to kick somebody and he said go ahead, we can always make up a reason later. He’s being recognized more and more.”

oh no, i'm late for a meeting and i dropped all my excerpts from The Origins of Totalitarianism (1951) on the floor!!

The temporary alliance between the elite and the mob rested largely on this genuine delight with which the former watched the latter destroy respectability. This could be achieved when the German steel barons were forced to deal with and to receive socially Hitler the housepainter and self-admitted former derelict, as it could be with the crude and vulgar forgeries perpetrated by the totalitarian movements in all fields of intellectual life, insofar as they gathered all the subterranean, nonrespectable elements of European history into one consistent picture. Since the bourgeoisie claimed to be the guardian of Western traditions and confounded all moral issues by parading publicly virtues which it not only did not possess in private and business life, but actually held in contempt, it seemed revolutionary to admit cruelty, disregard of human values, and general amorality, because this at least destroyed the duplicity upon which the existing society seemed to rest. What a temptation to flaunt extreme attitudes in the hypocritical twilight of double moral standards, to wear publicly the mask of cruelty if everybody was patently inconsiderate and pretended to be gentle, to parade wickedness in a world, not of wickedness, but of meanness! Particularly significant in this respect was the reception given Brecht's Dreigroschenoper in pre-Hitler Germany. The play presented gangsters as respectable businessmen and respectable businessmen as gangsters. The irony was somewhat lost when respectable businessmen in the audience considered this a deep insight into the ways of the world and when the mob welcomed it as an artistic sanction of gangsterism. The theme song in the play, 'Erst kommt das Fressen, dann kommt die Moral,' was greeted with frantic applause by exactly everybody, though for different reasons. The mob applauded because it took the statement literally; the bourgeoisie applauded because it had been fooled by its own hypocrisy for so long that it had grown tired of the tension and found deep wisdom in the expression of the banality by which it lived; the elite applauded because the unveiling of hypocrisy was such superior and wonderful fun. A reaction similar in its ambiguity was aroused some ten years later in France by Céline's Bagatelles pour un Massacre, in which he proposed to massacre all the Jews. André Gide was publicly delighted in the pages of the Nouvelle Revue Francaise, not of course because he wanted to kill the Jews of France, but because he rejoiced in the blunt admission of such a desire and in the fascinating contradiction between Céline's bluntness and the hypocritical politeness which surrounded the Jewish question in all respectable quarters. How irresistible the desire for the unmasking of hypocrisy was among the elite can be gauged by the fact that such delight could not even be spoiled by Hitler's very real persecution of the Jews, which at the time of Céline's writing was already in full swing.

Philip Roth said Trump’s native language wasn’t so much English as it was Jerkish. I think Jerkism is central to Trump’s appeal—the thrill of saying or hearing him say what you’re not supposed to say in politics, or in polite society.

ultimately i think the central thesis of trumpism might be true nihilism, just the absolute disdain for the idea that anything matters at all beyond winning an argument in the eyes of your supporters. there is no such thing as competence. there is only loyalty and occasionally bad press. that’s it

there are a few ways to make sense of it: eugenics and using disease to cull the population has a long fascist history, but also the idea that nothing *actually* matters beyond controlling a narrative is a core trump belief, so telling people we are healthier than ever is the same as being healthy

at their core, trans rights, abortion rights, and vaccine rights are actually all the same issue: they’re all about bodily autonomy, and the willingness to concede any of them puts the others at risk.

Saw another reply post saying “nobody will be punished for any of the administration’s crimes” in response to a post saying there need to be charges. Again, I say: fuck doomerism. You don’t have to be 100% convinced justice will be done but being the opposite is a self-fulfilling prophecy.
