Official Statement For Immediate Release On the evening of August 30, 2025, in New Hampshire, Mayor Giuliani was involved in a motor vehicle accident. Prior to the incident, he was flagged down by a woman who was the victim of a domestic violence incident. Mayor Giuliani immediately rendered assistance and contacted 911. He remained on scene until responding officers arrived to ensure her safety. Following this, while traveling on the highway, Mayor Giuliani's vehicle was struck from behind at high speed. He was transported to a nearby trauma center, where he was diagnosed with a fractured thoracic vertebrae, multiple lacerations and contusions, as well as injuries to his left arm and lower leg. His business partner and medical provider were promptly contacted and arrived at the hospital to oversee his care. At this time, no further updates are available. This is the only statement authorized by Mayor Giuliani. Signed, Michael Ragusa Head of Mayor Giuliani's Security Media/Press Inquiries: Michael Ragusa - Michael@shutdownsecurity.com

As @peterhotezmdphd.bsky.social & I document in great detail in #ScienceUnderSiege (due out 9/9: www.barnesandnoble.com/w/science-un...), the New York Times is very much implicated in the false balance and "performative neutrality" that has enabled this moment. Here's a brief excerpt from the book:

excerpt from book: The other side is actively doing all of this. They have cultivated a stable of well- trained, articulate, charismatic individuals with seemingly impressive credentials. They get them on cable television and talk shows and place their commentaries in leading news outlets. They work with an array of conservative celebrities and influencers to amplify their messaging on social media. And mainstream media organizations compromised by performative neutrality happily serve as enablers of it all. Look no further than the New York Times’s recent embrace of COVID antiscience on their opinion pages in the form of commentaries by nonexpert but authoritative- sounding Ivy League– credentialed individuals. We need our own stable of (actual) experts who are willing and able to write for and speak to popular audiences. We furthermore need buy- in from science- forward organizations and institutions willing to provide resources to train such a cadre and help them get their message out. And we need help from influencers and opinion leaders who can amplify the message using their formidable platforms.

Jesus fucking christ. The Trump administration tried to send a bunch of children to Guatemala at 3 am and justified it by saying that the kids just wanted to return to their parents in Guatemala, but the kids actually told the court that they are afraid of being sent back to Guatemala.

Tweet from Joshua J. Friedman: Plaintiffs: No. Possible some children might be in that situation, but everything we could find on short notice is children not in this situation. Judge: Mr. Ensign you saying that *all* these children have parents who are requesting their return to Guatemala? DOJ: That's what I've been told Tweet from Joshua J. Friedman: Judge: During recess, I read provision you cited and then the complaint. Every one of 10 named plaintiffs says they are *afraid* of being sent back to Guatemala. (Reads aloud from declarations.) Doesn't line up with what govt is saying. This is why we have courts.

This is appalling, criminal, and the GOP plan for everywhere: block cheap renewables in favor of expensive gas turbines. It won't even provide enough power, there's a 3-5 year backlog for turbines. We'll all pay far higher electricity bills to be sicker and to do more environmental damage.

Countertop induction devices are inexpensive and look fine hanging on the kitchen wall when not in use (or a drawer). I have the $50 IKEA one and it's been a workhorse for years, and the top is as pristine as when I bought it.

Also, the speed at which you can get water up to a boil! A full pot at my altitude (6800ft) takes around 3.5 minutes to boil on my $50 IKEA induction cooktop, but almost 20 minutes on the propane burner!

Induction stoves are quieter, cooler, and produce less toxic pollution than gas. On the other hand, they also cook better, as a growing number of professional chefs recognize.

IMHO, these are all inextricably intertwined: 1) authoritarianism 2) eugenics & racism & sexism 3) vandalism of public goods, property, and services 4) pseudo-science & anti-science They feed into one another and they never travel alone. Find one, and you'll find elements of all the others.

So conservative politicians have gotten away with appointing imbeciles to positions of power in these areas. However, no such luck for them in public health.
