That’ll probably be one of the pivotal points in UK history where we could have avoided so many problems in the future if the outcome had been different. We’d probably still be in the EU for one

The cost of people in small boats. 🏴 Asylum seeker benefits cost the equivalent of £2 per taxpayer 🏴 Tax avoidance costs the equivalent of £3,000 per taxpayer If Deform supporters and their hangers on can’t see they’re being stoked up to help make the ultra-rich richer, then I'm not surprised.

I asked ChatGPT what it thinks of my immigration idea. Small boats in the Channel are unsafe, chaotic & costly. What if instead of deterrence, we made crossings safe, legal & useful? Here’s the Channel Access & Work Pilot (CAWP) 🧵

Never let Farage say there isn’t an alternative. @iandunt.bsky.social @carolinelucas.bsky.social @eddavey.libdems.org.uk
Mike Chamberlain (@mikechamberlain.bsky.social) reply parent
The Channel will never be “solved” by slogans. But with a ferry, a work permit, and support for local councils, we can replace chaos with control.
Mike Chamberlain (@mikechamberlain.bsky.social) reply parent
Instead of spending billions on deterrence that doesn’t deter, CAWP flips the script: safe ferries, real jobs, stronger communities.
Mike Chamberlain (@mikechamberlain.bsky.social) reply parent
⚖️ This model is: • Orderly (capped & scheduled) • Humane (safe & legal) • Economically sane (workers, not hotel bills) • Politically realistic (built on UK–France treaty already in force).
Mike Chamberlain (@mikechamberlain.bsky.social) reply parent
📊 Pilot numbers: start with 500 people/week. That’s ~26k/year—enough to cut small-boat crossings drastically if scaled.
Mike Chamberlain (@mikechamberlain.bsky.social) reply parent
🔐 Security first: pre-boarding biometrics, watchlist checks, joint UK–France vetting. No boarding without clearance.
Mike Chamberlain (@mikechamberlain.bsky.social) reply parent
💰 Funding is already there. Hotels for asylum seekers cost the UK ~£8m a day. Every 1,000 people diverted from hotels for 90 days saves ~£15m—money we can recycle into communities.
Mike Chamberlain (@mikechamberlain.bsky.social) reply parent
✈️ If it doesn’t work out? A free, dignified exit ticket + reintegration support. Migration isn’t one-way by default.
Mike Chamberlain (@mikechamberlain.bsky.social) reply parent
🏘 Host communities don’t carry the cost alone. Councils get direct funding per placement to support schools, GPs, housing & integration
Mike Chamberlain (@mikechamberlain.bsky.social) reply parent
💼 Migrants are matched to UK regions that need workers: care, agriculture, hospitality, logistics. A job, ESOL support, and orientation from day 1.
Mike Chamberlain (@mikechamberlain.bsky.social) reply parent
🛂 On arrival, every passenger gets a Channel Work Permit: 24 months’ leave + immediate right to work. No hotel limbo, no months of waiting.
Mike Chamberlain (@mikechamberlain.bsky.social) reply parent
🚢 A weekly ferry from northern France to the UK. No smugglers, no dinghies. Places are capped, booked in advance, and fully security-checked before boarding.

The navy stopping migrants sounds so easy Do they push them back? How exactly? Do they sink them? Then what? Do we let them drown? Do we pick them up? Then what? Return to France? And if France disagrees then what? Your options: A. let them drown B. declare war on France C. land in uk. Pick one

Change would be rolling back Brexit, or doing something different about refugees, or new ideas on housing, benefits, maybe some kind of community investment, something that isn’t just the previous policies dressed up in slightly more efficient competence and sticking to a budget.

What is like to see is a Prime Minister with the moral courage to say, on the matter of immigration and asylum seekers, the far right are wrong on this matter. We should allow immigrants to work and settle here. We need them for our economy. They are a benefit to society.

Mike Chamberlain (@mikechamberlain.bsky.social) reply parent
Labour need to stand a strong argument to bring an alternative *to* the reform party, not an alternative reform party. Standing closer to the reform party just makes you look like the cunts you are standing next to. Not taller and better looking.
Mike Chamberlain (@mikechamberlain.bsky.social) reply parent
Unfortunately as a government you tend to have to stand for something, as the alternative will always be more interesting if what you are is dull, incompetent, moral cowards. People will end up voting for reform simply because they are fucking bored of the lack of anything ever changing.
Mike Chamberlain (@mikechamberlain.bsky.social)
Labour undoubtedly when faced with the challenge of reform will run on campaign of banal incompetence and lack of ideas, based on the idea that people will vote for them because the alternative is far right racists. This effectively is the campaign every time of “kick the Tories out”.
Mike Chamberlain (@mikechamberlain.bsky.social) reply parent
And we wouldn’t have to pay them to stay in hotels.
