The key difference between the Wii and the Switch is that the casual audience for the former never moved on from casual/party games and had no interest in the Wii U. The Switch either turned people into gamers or reignited their interest, which is a better way to get folks to buy a Switch 2.
I've heard suggestions that it has to do with the read speeds that the Switch 2 requires means a card less than 64GB is impractical, but that's just speculation.

One thing I've noticed is that Nintendo has taken around a decade to add to each IP. NSMBU to Wonder, DKC Tropical Freeze to Bananza, Pikmin 3 to 4, looks like the next 3D Mario, even if it's 2026. The difference is those older games got Switch ports. So we're due for a new Star Fox around 2027?

Ironically, it might be the bigger games that ditch Game Key Cards. The only other card is 64GB, so there's a good chance that games that would have used a card that big anyway would use it, leaving the smaller games to a Key Card. Or we could, y'know, have the physical game on the physical card.
Most consoles stick around because there's a big install base and because it's easy to develop if there's a similar current platform. That's why you see a lot of NES/GB, PS2/PSP, PS2/Wii, and to an extent PS4/PS5 and XB1/XSX.

Personal anecdote: I borrowed my brother's Switch for two years, and at the end of it nearly bought a Switch myself in 2024. Only reason I didn't is because I knew the Switch 2 was on its way. Scooped up the Switch 2 first chance I could and have been having a blast with it.
I can't imagine Nintendo bringing their games to PC or other consoles as long as they still have their own console.

Mario Kart definitely sold a lot because it's Mario Kart and it's a great game, but I'd bet more than a few people were persuaded into getting it because it was cheaper in the bundle.
I mean, the point of any bundle is that you guarantee money from the single purchase instead of relying on two separate purchases, potentially on separate occasions. Would *everyone* have bought Mario Kart for $80? No, but they'd get it in the bundle that's only $50 more.
Why start now? Game key cards/discs aren't new, just the branding. Why not sell empty discs/cards on the Wii U or Switch 1?

I'm ignoring the game key cards cards because they're not relevant. Nintendo isn't doing that for their first-party titles. It's an option for third-parties. But that's third-parties pushing for digital, not Nintendo.
Because people will buy a Switch 2 for Mario Kart, so bundle. People will also buy Switch 2 for Pokémon, so other bundle. For simplicity, they're the same price. I imagine any other major $80 games will also have a bundle for $500.
I mean the consumer, not the company. Getting one (1) digital game for less with your console is not going to get people to go all-digital, no matter how new of a release it is.
So how does a one-time discount on a digital game (new) with a console mean they're done with physical? It's possible to have just one digital game.
I'll grant that the bundle being day-and-date with the game, and the bundle costing more than the base console are different, but I'm saying that's all that's different from any other time there's been a game bundled with a console, which have been routinely digital since digital became a thing.

Including a digital game with a console isn't new. Every console since the 7th Gen has done it. I doubt a physical game bundle would cost any different.
The $20-30 difference isn't bc of the convenience of digital, it's bc you get the game and the console at the same time. In that sense, pack-ins being digital has been standard since the PS3/360.
Are they being locked into a digital marketplace, though? Sure, that game is digital, but you're still free to get any other game physically.
From gameplay footage, it looks pretty neat, but no amount of charm and effort is gonna make it more than a glorified instruction manual and it should have been free.
There's no way they could have made a Switch 1 version that was near playable. Thing would have been choppier than the night segments of Bowser's Fury but all the time.

Counterpoint: the Joy Con controls have you point with your right hand, which is not nice for lefties who are used to pointing with their left hand from Wii. In that case, the Pro Con pointer feels more intuitive.

As someone who never owned a Switch 1, I'm having a blast. If you do have a Switch 1, atm it depends on how much you like Mario Kart and are excited for DK Bananza.
Word of warning: Hall effect joy sticks might not work since the Switch 2 uses magnets to attach the controllers.
Switch 2 Joy Cons are bigger/ more substantial than the original. As for stick drift, it's still technically possible, but my guess is they've addressed it and shouldn't be a problem this time around. They're nice. They don't immediately make you want to reach for the Pro Controller.
The $80 game is on the card. It's just all the other games that aren't.

Banning =/= bricking. The console still plays games offline, and a factory reset won't brick it either, since you don't need to sign into an account. People need to stop saying that these consoles are bricked.
As someone who owns a Switch 2 and think their current business practices are as reasonable as they've ever been (low bar), I'm also on Brazil's side. I don't think a company should be able to brick my console just because I'm not using it the way they like.

The Game Key Card boxes make it so clear that the game isn't actually on the card, but any game that's just a code in a box tells you in only the tiniest footnote, when if anything that should be more prominent on the cover.
