The idea of highly specialised, niche AI which is potentially capable of bringing great benefit (cure cancer, control nuclear fusion, generate new materials and novel drugs, etc) is an exciting prospect but this pursuit of AGI/superintelligence is a BAD idea, especially when there's no oversight.

That interview with Mandelson in November was focussed on a role at Oxford Uni & briefly touched on the possibility of being ambassador. Epstein didn't come up. Perhaps it should have, safeguarding and all that. I don't suppose he's in the running for that kind of work any more.

Mark JK Lawrence (@mjkl.bsky.social) reply parent
I guess as long as he's running the "attack" department rather than being involved in defence then everything's okay 🫡

Interesting to see the tone of replies here compared to those on twitter!

I mean, is there anything beyond the 'optics' of having translators? It's there mainly for Putin's domestic consumption? A power play of sorts?
Mark JK Lawrence (@mjkl.bsky.social) reply parent
In which case it's perhaps interesting that all the reports were initially saying that they'll be having a one-on-one meeting, just with translators present?
Mark JK Lawrence (@mjkl.bsky.social) reply parent
I wonder if the Americans can listen in to that chat? Presumably it's all mic'ed up. I assume Putin is fluent in English, but just choses not to speak it in public?

Yeah, I agree.
Mark JK Lawrence (@mjkl.bsky.social) reply parent
Yeah, there is a bit of that in there. Tbh the gist of that conversation seems to be more about security than the damage itself. I think it's true to say that it will be very costly overall though, especially when you factor in future security considerations. chatgpt.com/share/688a38...

They'll have to strip the engines down to inspect, replace parts, etc etc. I don't know if you've ever flown, but if you have I'm sure you'll appreciate that the engine is quite important.
Mark JK Lawrence (@mjkl.bsky.social) reply parent
If you think about it, it's not just a case of scraping a bit of paint off. It could be corrosive and, apart from anything else, apparently they tried to damage the engines with crowbars. Who knows if they might have thrown nails or something into them.
Mark JK Lawrence (@mjkl.bsky.social) reply parent
I think it's perfectly possible (preferable, even) to protest for action to be taken on the horrendous situation in Palestine without being arrested, isn't it? George did 🤷♂️

Mark JK Lawrence (@mjkl.bsky.social) reply parent

Mark JK Lawrence (@mjkl.bsky.social) reply parent
I'm pretty certain "Palestine Action" wouldn't have been proscribed under most other circumstances, but as they broke into an airbase and caused a few million quids worth of damage to national defence assets (to our collective cost) they have had the book thrown at them. Probably best not do that.
