I actually did have a pet albino rat in high school- he disappeared down my friend’s bathtub drain while I was cleaning his cage. Later on dated/lived with a guy who had an enormous red-tailed boa constrictor that ate live rats. I don’t mind such critters when they’re somewhat contained…
Yup. It would be unrecognizable to a time traveler now. We also had a denser tree canopy so sidewalks were always shady- new luxury builds hate old trees apparently. The crazy part is how all that affordable housing we had actually made the neighborhood feel like a real community. 😭
There is a mouse on my front porch harassing me and angus just keeps talking about how cute this shitty little rodent is.
It’s sad, really. Most of the little homes, apartments, and duplexes my friends’ families and teachers rented here when I was a kid are all gone and have been replaced by monsterous McMansions with pools or luxury condos. I liked the neighborhood better back then…
HWEN. I’ve been here since 1982 and it’s changed a lot. I suppose everywhere has, it’s just wild that it’s so opposite of the neighborhood it once was that welcomed working class families, students, teachers, single-parent households, artists, etc.
It took me over an hour to drive ~15mi this morning. At this point I’d rather take the pay cut and go work at our Kroger that’s just down the street.

This! I live in a neighborhood fulla Boomers that want to “preserve the character.” Idk what they’re preserving. We had multi family housing all over the neighborhood & tons of affordable SFH rentals in the 80’s/90’s. We could rent as a family of 8 right here when my dad managed a Mrs Winner’s… wut?
I want housing for working class families too. The kind my neighborhood was once populated with when we had affordable apts, duplexes, etc. and my family could rent here on meager income. I want that neighborhood again. Sure beats whatever this place has become now (bland, cracker-assed, & dormant).

Wait. Is this not a thing anymore? My dad used to drive a van for Room In The Inn in the 80’s and pick up unhoused homies downtown to get a meal, shower, and a bed. It wasn’t 24/7 then but I ignorantly assumed the program had evolved to current standards. If we could make this happen count me in.

I briefly gained minor local fame for getting tripped up/tackled on the sidelines as a VU equip manager. Fuck that coach who popped out of the way at the last second (I had to carry his comms cords and stay behind that grizzly bear-sized coach, so I couldn’t see shit on the field most of the time).
I grew up nearby on Fairfax Ave and my uncle who had been an NCAA football coach (and former UT QB with a Natl title- 1951) had season tix for Vandy. He’d take me to every game. Even as a UT legend, he insisted on supporting your local team first.
