I don’t view “should people be treated like people” as a purity test. It’s about acknowledging that Newsome is willing to cave on human rights if he feels it’s advantageous to do so. People’s right to autonomy without government interference is a hard line for me. I think it should be for everyone.
This is an “enemy of my enemy” moment with Newsome. I’ll back what he’s doing as long as he’s directing at this administration but unless he recants his position on trans people, he’s not a solution.
