that things like perceptions of local crime started aligning with whatever was being pushed by the national outlets (especially problematic when networks like Fox can gin up mass hysteria by hyping a few isolated events).
Michael Preston (@mppreston.bsky.social) reply parent
The decline of local media/rise of Fox News/corporate takeover of news syndicates has to be a factored here too. I would venture a guess that as more people shifted to getting their news from national broadcast outlets (because there’s no local alternative presenting a differing view)

It’s very lazy that the media won’t make them show their work on this. They literally just say the exact same thing whenever they get in front of a camera! Ask them how many people in their own districts fit the stereotype they keep perpetuating. It’s infuriating.

You’re not ever going to be able to fully control what happens at a mass open protest like. People coming under an organized banner (say, a union) might adhere to a call to leave flags at home, but at some point it’s not realistic to expect total conformity in these situations.
Michael Preston (@mppreston.bsky.social) reply parent
Is the thinking that if everyone showed up at a protest without national flags and acted perfectly rational (in the face of possibly hostile law enforcement) that Trump wouldn’t be able to spin things? Said somewhat TIC, but should we just send robots out to stand in the streets?
Michael Preston (@mppreston.bsky.social) reply parent
Noted, but doesn’t make my point incorrect as this has been an ongoing piece of the Republican strategy for decades at this point. And the threat was loud & clear to people like us. Citizens do need to do their part to be informed, but we also have a broken media ecosystem that plays a part here.

My very smart friend Zach is right here. The reason a lot of these stories get into the media bloodstream is because Fox picks it up and runs it at the top of every hour and weaves it into all of their all shows. It gets to a fever pitch and breaks through. No analogue vector on the left.

Michael Preston (@mppreston.bsky.social)
I don’t think the vast majority of elected democrats are “randomly defending everything that’s done under the banner of DEI.” The issue - laid bare by recent events - is that that vast majority of DEI critics are not acting in good faith and we keep trying to “give it to them” when we don’t have to

Dem leadership is timid because they lost elections to Trump, a person they feel like you should self-evidently not vote for. They’ve forgotten how to make an affirmative case for what they are for, and have settled into arguing for what they’re against, which makes them reactionary by default.
