The whole 'primary' vs 'secondary' sex characteristics has always felt laughably backwards to me. Like people insist these things about our sex being critical and centralizing, when in reality, people readily make assumptions based on presenting gender until they're upset.
All the language about us effectively reinforces this idea that we exist on the good graces of cis society, which is alternately incensed by or amused at the pantomime they think our lives to be.
We are reduced, rhetorically and politically, to a class of people throwing tantrums who must be humored or ignored for the "real issues" based on how generous a cis interlocutor is feeling. Trans healthcare is not considered necessary, not regarded as part of a politics of bodily autonomy.
There is no understanding of trans oppression that at all places the emphasis on a hostile society that punishes us for our transgressions against cissexist ideals. People do not understand how much of our "gender distress" comes from being actively punished, brutalized, violated by patriarchy.
The result is that people now view transition as entirely cosmetic, as optional, as a matter of "free expression" that is perhaps unfortunate to curb but not ultimately life-threatening. Even when describing the danger to trans lives, it's always in terms of suicides. They think we're hysterical.
"No one thinks trans people change sex", "women can be male", "gender affirming care", "GRS"--so much trans politics has been developing euphemistic language to soothe the understanding of cis people, even "supportive" "allies", in a way that preserves "sex" as an immutable category.
When the US began to strip trans people of rights, revert documentation, move trans women to men's prisons, censor research, and move towards healthcare bans, most cis people posted things like "the government can't tell you who you are!" They think our biggest issue is validation, not actual harm.
