while clive is wholly capable of violence his strength is more in his vulnerable and kind nature. jill isnt naturally prone to violence but had to become a monster in her own (and others) eyes to survive. they bring out the best in each other. they figure out how to keep living.
theyre a good role reversal in a series (hell, rpgs or stories in general) thats had some really traditional couples of brooding damaged man and woman who heals him. they are both so damaged from what theyve been through and show it in different ways
shes such a beautiful contrast to clive, who is so warm and compassionate even to those whove done nothing but hurt him. jill is more willing to kill clives own mom for all the shitty things shes done to everyone, when clive wants to show her understanding and kindness. fuck me man
i love jill and i feel shes so underappreciated. shes stoic and cold and damaged. she has such a customer service smile most of the time. shes turbulent beneath the surface in a way i feel a lot of women are, where if youre functional enough youre just “boring” instead of “crazy.”
something that occurred to me playing through xiii is just how much i appreciate xvi letting jill actually take revenge with her own hands. it sucks shes sidelined for a lot of that sequence but she does get to look the guy in the eyes as he bleeds out on her sword and thats Neat

some people are convinced the more complicated a story is, its automatically intriguing, interesting. it gets the people going! but i think it takes a good mix of storytelling, characters, atmosphere, and/or art to make it work. and i think here that obfuscation hinders the story a lot
i think theres a quote from nomura himself somewhere that he likes to surprise his audience, catch them off guard and do something totally bonkers (see: all of kh but especially the final boss sequences in every game) and boy i feel that here, even if he was ultimately divorced from xiii’s universe
obviously i cant just leave it here because the other games seem like whole experiences but i do want to marinate a little bit on xiii before jumping into them. i thought while a bit nonsensical and needlessly obtuse in places, it was still a good ending
i thought it was xiii that ended with a big twist or cliffhanger but now i remember it was 2 i heard about it, where someone drops suddenly dead and the world ends or something so lightning plays guardian angel in LR, hmmmm

it makes me so eager to see how xiii goes and how it ends, and how the sequels feel and justify themselves. ive known most of the major story beats going in (to help me understand and keep things in context), but its definitely a different experience seeing it for myself

im convinced xiii has a lot of the meat of what was originally there. it got to exist as multiple games. it explored three games worth of ideas and exist as games you can play. im excited to see where this game goes and maybe the others too
its funny how ive never seen anyone be like “we were robbed of nomuras true vision!!1!” for xiii and the whole fabula nova thing, only for vs. trying to imagine versus now with proper context of what xiii actually *exists* as is… hmmmmm.
if 2 and LR feel this decidedly different from this game i can definitely understand the need to physically cut the games into pieces because the main halves of xiii feel like siblings that dont talk except on christmas where they pretend to get along
im trying to compare it to x and the calm lands vs getting the airship later, but the whole mood of gran pulse is so different it almost feels like this should have been the meat of the game. or make a bigger deal of literally going to hell but its this dangerous paradise. hmmm
i can see how people hate this area and i imagine esp for trying to get through quickly the plot comes to such a sudden halt while the characters are walking time bombs but… i do like these little character moments we get. im so conflicted. this game feels like it was made by 10 different people

i know the game opens up either in ch9 or 10, kind of like x did with the calm lands and then later fully with the airship. im fine with the linearity and some of the locations are more interesting than others… the pacing still feels really ??? but parts are working for me a bit i suppose

im trying to put xiii in the context it deserves, in its time period in gaming. even on easy mode i still need to engage with the systems and figure it out. i just… have to be done with it for now
god it brings to mind xii but also when i played miitopia, where a good portion of the challenge came from not directly controlling your party. im convinced that whole challenge dungeon is entirely luck based because even with the right setup you can just Lose.
xvi was admittedly nice to not give the other party members hp bars and statuses to babysit, but as a result you do feel more detached from the characters and their actions… and sometimes joshuas pillar of fire would jumpscare me like WHAT AAA oh ok its just you good job baby boy
meanwhile in xv you cant directly control the boys, but as a result the battles dont tend to be too strategically complicated. you can direct them enough but leaving them to their own devices doesnt tend to be detrimental to the flow of battle
the turn order and how it reacts to your potential moves, the distinct roles of each character, the open nature of the sphere grid, the bullshit debuffs and counters that come into play… you get punished for not knowing but you learn, you react, you win
