North England, interested in politics, history, birds, economics, personal finance…not a bot. Sometimes unintentionally irritating (I assume). Will try harder here.

Adidas bags 😁

What if they don’t need to?
nearlytoolate (@nearlytoolate.bsky.social) reply parent
Aren’t market reactions basically the only thing that’s restrained Trump so far?
nearlytoolate (@nearlytoolate.bsky.social) reply parent
Yes, it would cause chaos. Don’t make the mistake the US is making. These people absolutely intend to do what they say they will.
nearlytoolate (@nearlytoolate.bsky.social) reply parent
I never get American ‘satire’. I guess it’s lost in translation
nearlytoolate (@nearlytoolate.bsky.social) reply parent
Gawd I sat through the residence. It was American verbosity at its finest- feature film length would have been entertaining. As it was I kept thinking ‘wait what there’s more?’ Put me in the idiots box, please.
nearlytoolate (@nearlytoolate.bsky.social) reply parent
That would do it, yeah.

Only one?

I can understand friends looking out for each other.
nearlytoolate (@nearlytoolate.bsky.social) reply parent
The only thing I’ve ever had access to for my kids is their school dinner spending!
nearlytoolate (@nearlytoolate.bsky.social) reply parent
We never tracked our kids. Is that now considered negligent?
nearlytoolate (@nearlytoolate.bsky.social) reply parent
Frankly the level of fear, hysteria and downright misinformation on social (and traditional) media is off the scale.
nearlytoolate (@nearlytoolate.bsky.social) reply parent
It’s such a waste though of a lot of promising work. I sincerely hope the scientists are able to move and continue elsewhere.
nearlytoolate (@nearlytoolate.bsky.social) reply parent
No it should just be called a war crime. Fancy academic labels are an irrelevant diversion
nearlytoolate (@nearlytoolate.bsky.social) reply parent
They are already making and normalising those demands.
nearlytoolate (@nearlytoolate.bsky.social) reply parent
There *are* restrictions on normal kitchen knives too. Age restrictions on purchase and general restrictions on carrying them without ‘good reason’
nearlytoolate (@nearlytoolate.bsky.social) reply parent
Both I think. It’s certainly harder for kids who don’t have books and reading around them at home.
nearlytoolate (@nearlytoolate.bsky.social) reply parent
For sure yes. I was responding to your comment about not remembering learning to read. I don’t either.
nearlytoolate (@nearlytoolate.bsky.social) reply parent
Ie figuring out the patterns themselves by having someone read out while they look at the text.
nearlytoolate (@nearlytoolate.bsky.social) reply parent
Personally I think a lot of people who learnt reading early (without being ‘taught’) just did it through reading with a parent and learning word recognition and phonetic sounding out.
nearlytoolate (@nearlytoolate.bsky.social) reply parent
No aiui we used whole word not three cue.
nearlytoolate (@nearlytoolate.bsky.social) reply parent
But whole word isn’t the same as three cues
nearlytoolate (@nearlytoolate.bsky.social) reply parent
Is it? How do the Chinese learn to read?
nearlytoolate (@nearlytoolate.bsky.social) reply parent
These days people aren’t allowed to be ill or have any break at all

nearlytoolate (@nearlytoolate.bsky.social) reply parent
‘ I regret saying this’ no he bloody doesn’t.
nearlytoolate (@nearlytoolate.bsky.social) reply parent
My sons instructions basically amount to ‘pretend you (and they) are invisible’ 😂
nearlytoolate (@nearlytoolate.bsky.social) reply parent
I tried that, it didn’t go down well 😂
nearlytoolate (@nearlytoolate.bsky.social) reply parent
Don’t make any small talk or ask any friendly open questions 😐
nearlytoolate (@nearlytoolate.bsky.social) reply parent
Disappointed to see you rule out an increase in auto enrolment contributions- many people erroneously believe that because this is the govnt mandated level it will be adequate.
nearlytoolate (@nearlytoolate.bsky.social) reply parent
If that’s what you thought I was doing then you have misunderstood completely.
nearlytoolate (@nearlytoolate.bsky.social) reply parent
Infertility described as a ‘disability’ is an…interesting POV. Of course sexual reproduction is a thing, and the simple model of phenotypic sex at birth as biological sex mostly works - that’s why it’s useful. But surely we’re talking about the complexities that don’t fit the simple model.
nearlytoolate (@nearlytoolate.bsky.social) reply parent
Lots of humans can’t reproduce.
nearlytoolate (@nearlytoolate.bsky.social) reply parent
It irritates me no end. And it’s also a deliberate attempt to make it sound like there’s a clear, simple binary when really, biology is all about variation, for every ‘rule’ there’s an exception.
nearlytoolate (@nearlytoolate.bsky.social) reply parent
These are the most weight sensitive. Cage types might work too…
nearlytoolate (@nearlytoolate.bsky.social) reply parent
I’ve tried every type of squirrel proof feeder - some are better then others and some are more weight sensitive- but these might not be heavy enough to trigger. They are 30% heavier than a blackbird though.
nearlytoolate (@nearlytoolate.bsky.social) reply parent
This is my greatest disappointment with the SC (and the whole anti trans discourse really). Talking about ‘biological sex’ without defining it, acknowledging complexity and unknowns, has made any attempt at discussion, learning and understanding pretty difficult.
nearlytoolate (@nearlytoolate.bsky.social) reply parent
People say ‘biological sex’ when they really mean ‘sex assigned at birth’ - or phenotypic ‘sex’. Like much in science this is essentially a model, a simplification, which is useful but doesn’t describe all the complexity that exists (some of which is not fully understood).
nearlytoolate (@nearlytoolate.bsky.social) reply parent
They watch and listen? Do squirrel proof feeders work on them? Luckily not reached my area (yet)
nearlytoolate (@nearlytoolate.bsky.social) reply parent
What is the issue with a debit card? 🤔
nearlytoolate (@nearlytoolate.bsky.social) reply parent
The irony that we actually have enormously generous tax breaks for investing…
nearlytoolate (@nearlytoolate.bsky.social) reply parent
Maybe because the much discussed reduction in cash isa allowance is not actually policy?
nearlytoolate (@nearlytoolate.bsky.social) reply parent
You can pay tax at any age. Same rules for everyone
nearlytoolate (@nearlytoolate.bsky.social) reply parent
There’s a few things 16/17 yo can’t do. Can’t take out contracts, or credit (student loan excepted), can’t hold investments in their own right. Can’t buy property. Can’t leave education either. Can’t get a tattoo. Can’t buy alcohol. The list is endless.
nearlytoolate (@nearlytoolate.bsky.social) reply parent
Or green, wherever they are in that classification
nearlytoolate (@nearlytoolate.bsky.social) reply parent
Except that in a lot of reform stronghold areas it just doesn’t get that hot. See NE England.
nearlytoolate (@nearlytoolate.bsky.social) reply parent
I wish you had some manners. Goodness me, you’re a piece of work aren’t you? Reread my posts and consider why you responded so rudely. Bye.
nearlytoolate (@nearlytoolate.bsky.social) reply parent
I can only see mention of humanities. The rest is your invention.
nearlytoolate (@nearlytoolate.bsky.social) reply parent
Did I mention STEM? No.
nearlytoolate (@nearlytoolate.bsky.social) reply parent
What are the problem solving elements of a humanities degree? Argument and critical analysis yes, I see that
nearlytoolate (@nearlytoolate.bsky.social) reply parent
Cup of tea, something to read, chat with your best beloved. What’s not to like?
nearlytoolate (@nearlytoolate.bsky.social) reply parent
It does say ‘get up’ not ‘wake up’
nearlytoolate (@nearlytoolate.bsky.social) reply parent
Relatable 😅
nearlytoolate (@nearlytoolate.bsky.social) reply parent
Don’t the French have black market workers?
nearlytoolate (@nearlytoolate.bsky.social) reply parent
People who haven’t looked at the evidence?
nearlytoolate (@nearlytoolate.bsky.social) reply parent
But that may be what he means by environment and living conditions. Worth spelling out what determines those though!
nearlytoolate (@nearlytoolate.bsky.social) reply parent
Controversial? I thought that was pretty well accepted 😬
nearlytoolate (@nearlytoolate.bsky.social) reply parent
Well he’s going to render it completely useless and non credible at this rate. Maybe there’s a gap in the market for an ethical AI? Or maybe there will just be blue AI and red AI.
nearlytoolate (@nearlytoolate.bsky.social) reply parent
Weirdly, my 1970s primary schooling was entirely metric, and I’ve been confused all my life about imperial measures. Especially volume measures.
nearlytoolate (@nearlytoolate.bsky.social) reply parent
This seems sensible tbh
nearlytoolate (@nearlytoolate.bsky.social) reply parent
Exactly! At least that’s clear!
nearlytoolate (@nearlytoolate.bsky.social) reply parent
And frankly there were so many less billions back in the 1980s, I blame inflation. (And while we’re here what is a trillion? 10^12? I mean linguistically neither billion nor trillion make sense)
nearlytoolate (@nearlytoolate.bsky.social) reply parent
I’m with John here. I can’t remember being taught billion as a word and I did A level maths (in the 1980s). Actual ^ numbers are much clearer (as long as you get your 6,9 and 12 correct!) especially when a word can clearly mean two different numbers.
nearlytoolate (@nearlytoolate.bsky.social) reply parent
I guess that’s why I thought it was the other way around…I (thought I) knew the US was the ‘other’ definition. This all just proves that it’s not surprising that half of adults get it wrong (50/50 chance)
nearlytoolate (@nearlytoolate.bsky.social) reply parent
Tbf it makes sense to have different names for 10 to the 9 and 10 to the 12.
nearlytoolate (@nearlytoolate.bsky.social) reply parent
In my schooling names were only used for up to 6 zeros (before or after the DP). So I know millions and micros but anything bigger or smaller was just in numbers. Which are far less ambiguous anyway.
nearlytoolate (@nearlytoolate.bsky.social) reply parent
Oh I thought they were the other way around! Do we use the US definition in our finances?
nearlytoolate (@nearlytoolate.bsky.social) reply parent
Oh this I don’t like.
nearlytoolate (@nearlytoolate.bsky.social) reply parent
Great approach 👏🏻
nearlytoolate (@nearlytoolate.bsky.social) reply parent
I might be one of them 😬
nearlytoolate (@nearlytoolate.bsky.social) reply parent
Even at face value it was pretty clear it was their own fault
nearlytoolate (@nearlytoolate.bsky.social) reply parent
She wasn’t, clearly. As I said, I have no evidence either way, but it was something I wondered about when I read the book.
nearlytoolate (@nearlytoolate.bsky.social) reply parent
Ok, but they weren’t looking for work 🤔
nearlytoolate (@nearlytoolate.bsky.social) reply parent
Indeed. For them.
nearlytoolate (@nearlytoolate.bsky.social) reply parent
I also thought they had lost the house through their own reckless actions. The line between foolish and deceitful can be quite blurred where debt and money are concerned. But it turned out well for them in the end…
nearlytoolate (@nearlytoolate.bsky.social) reply parent
I guess they think silence is the best option.
nearlytoolate (@nearlytoolate.bsky.social) reply parent
Yes. I think the other element that the article didn’t explore was their use of the benefit system to support their walk. Probably within the rules but it was one of the things that made me feel they were chancers. Certainly hit the jackpot with the book, smart move.
nearlytoolate (@nearlytoolate.bsky.social) reply parent
And a great time to be a non graduate? How about ‘young person’ 🤔🤔
nearlytoolate (@nearlytoolate.bsky.social) reply parent
Tbh primary secondary whatever, people have always moved. It’s what they/we do.
nearlytoolate (@nearlytoolate.bsky.social) reply parent
Umm okay.
nearlytoolate (@nearlytoolate.bsky.social) reply parent
And it also got me thinking about whether it would be a good universal rule!
nearlytoolate (@nearlytoolate.bsky.social) reply parent
I was partly wondering how you achieve it practically. I guess at 11 it’s easier.
nearlytoolate (@nearlytoolate.bsky.social) reply parent
Is that internet off for everyone?
nearlytoolate (@nearlytoolate.bsky.social) reply parent
But much behaviour change had happened in anticipation of lockdown. Without formal restrictions people would likely have mixed more as soon as the news looked better, etc etc
nearlytoolate (@nearlytoolate.bsky.social) reply parent
Presumably the extra 120k is supposed to come from (white) women making lots of babies? Good luck with that
nearlytoolate (@nearlytoolate.bsky.social) reply parent
Not sure what that makes me- only glasto experience was in 1987 🤯
nearlytoolate (@nearlytoolate.bsky.social) reply parent
My thoughts too. Not sure how people conclude that a woman will be next leader.
nearlytoolate (@nearlytoolate.bsky.social) reply parent
Are women over represented in that list or is the cabinet really more than half women?
nearlytoolate (@nearlytoolate.bsky.social) reply parent
Back to the future surely…sounds like Seeley
nearlytoolate (@nearlytoolate.bsky.social) reply parent
If we could 😁
nearlytoolate (@nearlytoolate.bsky.social) reply parent
I wonder how much of the audience is aghast liberals unintentionally amplifying and legitimising?
nearlytoolate (@nearlytoolate.bsky.social) reply parent
The problem is that it’s attempting to prevent some scenarios but laying down general principles that are actually unworkable. And it seems to make no distinction between general academic opinions (related to subject) and personal bigotry towards individuals in the here and now..
nearlytoolate (@nearlytoolate.bsky.social) reply parent
If this gives lecturers licence to make crass sexist and racist (or other discriminatory) remarks in a maths class then…??
nearlytoolate (@nearlytoolate.bsky.social) reply parent
Oh you just beat me to it!
nearlytoolate (@nearlytoolate.bsky.social) reply parent
The network of public rights of way, access land, and our ordnance survey maps. Make hiking and walking in the great outdoors accessible, fun and creative, rather than being confined to waymarked trails as in many countries.
nearlytoolate (@nearlytoolate.bsky.social) reply parent
Or indeed that this constitutes ‘learning’
