I’m with John here. I can’t remember being taught billion as a word and I did A level maths (in the 1980s). Actual ^ numbers are much clearer (as long as you get your 6,9 and 12 correct!) especially when a word can clearly mean two different numbers.

And frankly there were so many less billions back in the 1980s, I blame inflation. (And while we’re here what is a trillion? 10^12? I mean linguistically neither billion nor trillion make sense)
