Once a year, Chicago closes Lake Shore Drive to cars and opens it up for people. #BikeTheDrive shows us what’s possible when we put people first. I’m running for State Senate to fight for the bike and pedestrian infrastructure we need. Learn more at nickforillinois.com.

Your electric bill is going up—45% since last summer. While ComEd profits and data centers are straining our grid, state legislators need to do more. I’m ready to fight for clean, affordable energy and for the people here in our district.

Illinois deserves a transit system that moves us faster, cleaner, and smarter. Electrifying Metra means quicker trips and cleaner air—and if we pair it with bold transit-oriented development, we can build new housing, shops, and community spaces right by our stations.

Illinois can’t keep patching up a transit system from another era. We need electrified Metra lines, faster service, and a vision for high-speed Midwest rail. Springfield must rally experts and listen to neighbors to build transit that meets the moment. www.chicagobusiness.com/opinion/high...

My senate district in Illinois has one of the cleanest grids in America. On 98% of hours in a given year we have enough clean energy produced in northern Illinois to meet *100%* of electricity demand. @nickforillinois.bsky.social wants to do even more as we electrify!

A group of supporters of Nick Uniejewski on the lakefront with the Hancock tower in the background DA Liked by neu_edgewateruptown and others nickforillinois Last night's salon on energy policy made one thing clear: we need to use every tool in the toolbox to build a cleaner, more reliable grid-including scaling up nuclear energy and battery storage. Chicago once led the way on this. The John Hancock Center (in our district!) was one of the first skyscrapers in the world powered entirely by electricity. But today, too many households are stuck with rising electricity bills that are among their biggest-and most unpredictable-expenses, because of increasing energy demand. With ComEd hiking rates, Springfield needs leaders who will bring costs down. We can get there by fixing the Illinois Power Agency's funding mechanism so it can keep procuring affordable, clean energy for our state. Creating carve outs for battery storage, and repealing the nuclear moratorium allowing new full-scale nuclear energy to be built. Doing this requires leaders who will listen to advocates, learn from research and other states, and get to work on policies that make energy affordable, sustainable, and ready for new demands like data centers. The stakes are high. It's time to do things differently. 8 hours ago An advertisement for the Hancock tower touting that it will be all-electric, before carbon emissions or climate change were an issue people cared about

Changes to Medicaid Overall, anywhere from 17-29 million people are going to lose healthcare coverage over the next ten years thanks to this bill. Two big changes are detailed below. Work Requirements: enrollees who are childless adults between the ages of 19-64 (with exceptions for pregnant people, people with disabilities and their caregivers), and parents of children 14 years or older would be required to prove that they worked at least 80 hours during the previous month. They would have to do this reporting every single month. only 3% of Medicaid recipients are of working age, presumably able to work, but not actually working. Interviews show many of these people are caregiving, in school, or disabled but not on SSI. Kicking many immigrants with legal status off Medicaid. Republicans voted to immediately take away healthcare from whole groups of immigrants who reside here legally, including refugees and asylum seekers. Changes to SNAP (food stamps) Work Requirements: Republicans also changed the work requirements for the SNAP program to include even more people. They raised the maximum age from 55 to 65, they now include parents of children age 14 and up, and they are now also requiring people experiencing homelessness, veterans, and youth who aged out of foster care who are 18-24 years old. Just like with Medicaid, people will have to prove every single month that they worked at least 20 hours per week. Making States pay more of the cost: another major change is that States are going to have to contribute way more money to operate the program. States will have to pay between 5-15% of the benefit costs and 50% of the administrative costs. Many many states will not be able to afford to do this. Their choices will be to raise taxes, to make it harder to apply in order to cut down on the number of enrollees (to save money), or they may choose to not operate a SNAP program at all. Excluding immigrants from SNAP, too. Illinois needs single-stair reform. Right now, Illinois requires two stairwells in most apartment buildings—even ones on small lots. I know, it sounds minor. But this requirement adds up to $250,000 in project costs and eats up space that could be used for actual housing.

This is the problem we face with funding cuts to CTA. Wait 20+ minutes for the bus, or pay $20 to Uber three miles. It doesn’t need to be this way. We need transit reform and sustainable funding NOW.

The CTA (and Metra and Pace) are funded through the Regional Transit Authority, which is largely funded by state government.

Springfield walked away without a transit deal — and our communities are the ones paying the price. We need leaders who understand what’s at stake and are ready to fight.

Just hosted a salon in a coach house—currently illegal to build due to outdated zoning laws that prohibit Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs). I’m running to legalize missing middle housing across Illinois, expand affordability, and give communities the tools to grow sustainably.

🚍 Illinois just dropped an 887-page transit funding bill. I’m on board with most of it—but we need to ensure sustainable, equitable funding.

Illinois’ big transit reform bill is here. ✅ Equity wins ✅ Fare simplification ✅ Transit ambassadors ❌ But… no funding ❌ More bureaucracy ❌ More cops on trains We need to modernize our systems and secure the funding needed to do it right. Let’s keep fighting!

Illinois is facing a transit funding cliff. Without bold action, CTA stations will close, bus routes will be cut, and trains will run less often—or not at all. Tell your legislators: we need real investment now. secure.everyaction.com/fwlkRENlyUyCUrVLw0LY3Q2

Lincoln Square’s got history, heart—and a housing crisis. Deconversions are erasing homes, and outdated laws make it too hard to build. On a walk with Walking Chicago, I even ran into @slowstreets.org advocates to talk safer, more walkable neighborhoods. Time for new, energetic leadership.

Rent and utilities in Chicago have increased by 28% since 2000, but wages have only grown by 9% in that same period. We need to build more housing and stop price gouging by landlords so we can live in communities we love without the fear of being priced out. www.wbez.org/interactive/...
