There was a two-day pause in the press terrorising the public with tales about a horde of orcish scum swarming towards us like World War Z, long enough for a short period of very awkward whoops-have-we-maybe-fucked-it-a-bit, and then it was right back to all day hate wall to wall.

I know we have goldfish memories now, but it really is only a few months since the US vice president stood up before Europe’s leaders and told them they were a bunch of Muslim-loving Marxist homosexuals who deserved to get rammed by Vladimir Putin, and that does feel somewhat relevant here

Again - the reason that the Good Friday Agreement locks in the ECHR is that the UK had repeatedly been held accountable by the European Court of Human Rights for human rights breaches during the Troubles - while national courts had failed to do so, even upholding miscarriages of justice
Colm O'Cinneide (@colmocinneide.bsky.social) reposted reply parent
The report also glosses over - in a single paragraph! - how the GFA refers to the ECHR (not 'ECHR righs') as being a key 'safeguard' of the Agreement. That's the single most relevant clause in the whole text, and the report just wriggles away from it.

'Trans people should have access to safe third spaces' is the weasel lie of a transphobe convinced they wriggle their way through appearing moderate to uninformed cis people while winking to their fellow transphobes. 'This percentage of the population should disappear to an imaginary solution'
CN Lester 🏳️⚧️ (@cnlester.bsky.social) reposted reply parent
There are a whole raft of other reasons why 'force people to out themselves and go to their separate area' is bullshit, but this is the most pressing one for me. Very few 'safe third spaces' exist (and there's been a whole political/media war against them existing.)

Trump's contribution to our politics was exposing that conservatives don't care about any of the principles they've said are sacrosanct for 100 years, and all they wanted was to be openly evil instead of circuitously evil. The Democrats who win will be the ones who understand this and act like it

He knew how far to push things; highlighting the line between authenticity and stereotypes (especially in the comedy roles like Red Green). Even when he played stereotypical parts (i.e. the "noble savage") he brought a gravitas that gave greater depth to the cliche, showing how inadequate it was.

Adding to this now that the initial shock has worn off. On top of being a great actor in general, the way he represented Natives/First Nations on screen was important. He captured our culture in an authentic way, while leaning into the tropes in a way that exposed how ridiculous so many of them are.

RIP Graham Greene. Every time he popped up on screen when I was a kid, my mom would excitedly point him out for being an actual Native on the screen. Able to be deadly serious and infinitely hilarious (even in smaller roles like Last of Us), he ate up the screen. Nʌki’wah brother.
