You're right. Progress has to be maintained. Great figures from the past, like ML King, Ghandi, Mandela, should not become relics for politicians to pop out only when convenient.
Racism is, alas, not only an American phenomenon. Here in Europe we're facing it, possibly on an even deeper scale. So called "democracy" is often just a veneer, to cover up terrible actions (and corruption) by governments.

It's a worldwide phenomenon. Where the political system some call "democracy" allows it, money buys out voters. That who has the money calls the shots. Those who refuse to follow suit are sidelined, deported or, if need be, eliminated.
A party's lifeline are the sponsors, official and unofficial. If one has enough money, one can distort enough minds to sway votes in the direction they desire. From a politicians view point it's just a game.

Sadly, society in the USA still suffers from the country's past. While citizens are considered equal in principle, there are deeply ingrained economic inequalities and societal divisions.

You do have a point. Wealth redistribution often comes with some form of discrimination. But ascribing to the new deal the responsibility for segregation is historically inconsistent. Segregation in the USA predated the new deal. In South Africa, ANC who overcame racism had strong communist roots.

Why would one feel pride (or shame) in something one didn't create? Acknowledging is the moral thing to do, but in a capitalistic law-based society it can lead to unintended consequences (like questioning the concept of property and inheritance).
