The recent kerfuffle in Ukraine with the massive protests, was because Zelensky signed a bill that would have blocked Ukraine from joining the EU. I fully believe it was a mistake made by a man under enormous pressure, but it shows why the requirements to join are so vital.
I do believe they'll get in, but rushing their membership can also be damaging for Ukraine. Fulfilling the requirements to join means that Ukraine is a healthy Democracy with proper separation of powers, human rights etc. The requirements are also there to protect the population of the applicant.
The amount of anti-Ukrainian sentiment in Poland is just disgusting. It's turning into another Hungary or Slovakia. I'm incredibly disappointed.
Zelensky is the best, but who comes after him? We can't afford another Hungary or Slovakia in a decade or two. I have confidence they will join eventually, but we need all 27 members onboard.
It's a common misunderstanding that the EU can kick out members. Ukraine's membership can be fast tracked, but they still need to fulfill the criterions. It's too dangerous for the union when the future is so uncertain, but we should do whatever we can to help them until then.
