While defending the luddite argument in Discord, I stumbled into this IMO succinct explanation for opposing generative AI: At every step in the process, it impoverishes us.

AI impoverishes us at every step of the process: - data centers pollute our environment - energy use drives up costs - content theft robs creators of income - the actual output is used to displace workers and depress wages - using it harms our mental health and impairs our competence - the flood of AI slop is damaging our sociopolitical landscape All in service of making a worse product - and world - to enrich a handful of already spectacularly wealthy people

Screenshot of two tweets from Matt Walsh’s verified Twitter account (@MattWalshBlog). First tweet (17 hours ago): “It’s time to have a national conversation about common sense restrictions on transgenders.” The tweet has 1.3K comments, 3.8K retweets, 42K likes, and 1M views. Second tweet (18 hours ago): “It wasn’t all that long ago that anyone who identified as the opposite sex would be involuntarily committed to an insane asylum. Does anyone at this point seriously think that our current approach is an improvement?” The tweet has 666 comments, 1.9K retweets, 21K likes, and 362K views. First tweet is by Michael Knowles (@michaeljknowles), reposted by Christopher F. Rufo. It reads: “For the good of society and especially for the good of the poor people who have fallen prey to this delusion, transgenderism must be eradicated from public life entirely—the whole preposterous ideology, at every level.” The tweet has 816 comments, 2.4K retweets, 17K likes, and 379K views. Second tweet is by Christopher F. Rufo (@realchrisrufo), 20 hours ago: “The trans cult hatched such an enormous propaganda campaign, that, for a number of years, they were able to obscure an obvious truth: pumping kids full of synthetic hormones, while telling them they can change from boy to girl, will only end in tragedy or disaster.” The tweet has 878 comments, 1.5K retweets, 9.2K likes, and 120K views. Third tweet is also by Christopher F. Rufo, 20 hours ago: “We should now put to rest the libertarian delusion that transgenderism is a matter of ‘personal choice,’ or ‘live and let live.’ It’s an ideology that has done grave damage to millions of Americans, and has unleashed a nihilistic wave of violence on our society. Enough.” The tweet has 921 comments, 1.5K retweets, 9.6K likes, and 293K views.

The huge bureaucracy that exists in the system to make poor people feel bad about themselves would not be money and time wasted with Universal Basic Income.

I think UBI is great. It’s an acknowledgement that nobody else has the right to tell you what you can best contribute to the world, and it’s based on a certain faith — that people want to contribute something to the world, most people do. I’m sure there are a few people who would be parasites, but most people actually want to do something; they want to feel that they have contributed something to the society around them. The problem is that we have this gigantic apparatus that presumes to tell people who’s worthy, who’s not, what people should be doing, what they shouldn’t. They’re all about assessing value, but in fact, the whole system fell apart in 2008 because nobody really knows how to do it. We don’t really know how to assess the value of people’s work, of people’s contributions, of people themselves, and philosophically, that makes sense; there is no easy way to do it. So the best thing to do is just to say, alright, everyone go out and you decide for yourselves. - David Graeber

all of this is basically a trojan horse for my sinking feeling right now that generative AI will be 'good enough' and that's...potentially a very bad outcome!

Good enough has been keeping me up at night. Because good enough would likely mean that not enough people recognize what’s really being built—and what’s being sacrificed—until it’s too late. What if the real doomer scenario is that we pollute the internet and the planet, reorient our economy and leverage ourselves, outsource big chunks of our minds, realign our geopolitics and culture, and fight endlessly over a technology that never comes close to delivering on its grandest promises? What if we spend so much time waiting and arguing that we fail to marshal our energy toward addressing the problems that exist here and now? That would be a tragedy—the product of a mass delusion. What scares me the most about this scenario is that it’s the only one that doesn’t sound all that insane.

A man understandably refused to hand over his ID or get out of the car for a bunch of masked thugs who refused to identify themselves. And when he drove away, they opened fire on him. This isn’t how you do any sort of enforcement when your goal is to uphold the law. This is gangsterism.

NEW 🚨 The violence is the point. Elected Dems must call for widespread resignations (RFK, Bhattacharya, Prasad) in response to the CDC shooting. Public health must demand this of them, and the public must demand that of us. With @publichealthguy1.bsky.social in STAT: www.statnews.com/2025/08/15/c...

In my radio days, I worked an 8 hour-long appearance and heard "Payphone" 11 times. From then on, I avoid M5 music altogether. I've heard enough for one lifetime

Kim Davis going from "my religious beliefs demand that I don't facilitate a same-sex marriages" to "my religious beliefs demand that there are NO same-sex marriages anywhere" *should* make Democrats realize there is no "sincere" compromise with bigots on trans issues.
