-Can’t find anything about a bakery thing, seems inconsequential. -Politicians are going to politic; California is redistricting this year as well. -We’re a constitutional republic, not a democracy. -The top causes of childhood death are still accidental injuries, MVCs, congenial issues.

Since gun rights have been progressing for the past 20 years and the advent of 3D printed guns has neutered any legislation, the whole banning concept is off the table. So, now, my best “good reason” for gun ownership is this: because I can. If you don’t like it, I suggest screaming into a pillow.

I recall. Bedside nursing for the first two rounds of COVID left a lasting impression The mantra of “fat, male, over 60.” marched through my head for more than a year and a half.

Sure, Jan. If we got through Carter, Obama, and the COVID/BLM fiasco, we’ll get through another half-baked Trump presidency.

There will always be differences of opinion. The problem with her suggestions: -didn’t change any in the 90’s/00’s when they were tried -violate protected health information -violate due process laws Her heart may be in the right place, but the suggestions are a constitutional lawyer’s nightmare.

That would not fly in the US. See, cultural differences. Ours are safe as well. The security protocols and sheriffs deputies in our schools help keep us ahead of the curve, helping respond to or identify those who may attempt to perpetrate some sort of Parkland or Minneapolis-style of attack.
Pair O’Dime Shift (@pairodimeshift.bsky.social) reply parent
True, but it was trotted out and given as “gods honest truth and don’t you forget it” from all the politicians/media for how long?
Pair O’Dime Shift (@pairodimeshift.bsky.social) reply parent
Yes, and they were unheard of beforehand also. I’ll note that said measures were applied to a populace that already had a very weak gun culture. Now the UK Olympic pistol team has to train in other countries due to the overbearing nature of those restrictions. Again, our culture is not the same.
Pair O’Dime Shift (@pairodimeshift.bsky.social) reply parent
Yes, these occur and are exceptionally rare (one every few years). But there is no one magic bullet for reducing access to the guns, so the better track would be early identification and intervention on the part of the perpetrators; I.e., assess their commonalities and then filter for them socially.
Pair O’Dime Shift (@pairodimeshift.bsky.social) reply parent
If enhanced gun control includes the measures that you mentioned at the beginning of this discussion, those would be overturned and waffle-stomped by the US courts in short order. One of the biggest changes in the gun rights community over the last 15 years is a very robust legal advocacy movement.
Pair O’Dime Shift (@pairodimeshift.bsky.social) reply parent
Mass shootings are exceedingly rare, especially ones aimed exclusively at children. Again, the legal hoops necessary to placate the “never happen again” crowd would require a level of authoritarianism that would make George Orwell cry. The best we can do is attempt to identify perpetrators early.

Remember “6 feet apart”, “2 weeks to flatten the curve”, and how outdoor activities were restricted unless it was to protest for “good” social change? That was some high quality science.
Pair O’Dime Shift (@pairodimeshift.bsky.social) reply parent
I’ve run through why the restrictions on guns you mentioned don’t make sense given the ratios of the crime. The more meaningful action I do support involves early identification of individuals who will commit these crimes. Most of them make statements and/or have identifiable behaviors.
Pair O’Dime Shift (@pairodimeshift.bsky.social) reply parent
I’m not afraid of such a thing. I’ve been having these discussions for over 25 years and recognize that there’s a cultural aspect to this conversation that not everyone understands.
Pair O’Dime Shift (@pairodimeshift.bsky.social) reply parent
It’s an analogy to highlight the pretzel logic in applying all the restrictions necessary to stop a super-minority of legal offenders from committing their niche crime. In this case, the focus is items in common use: firearms and internet-capable devices.
Pair O’Dime Shift (@pairodimeshift.bsky.social) reply parent
They are designed to fire a projectile reliably and accurately, but that’s all. There are >450 million guns in circulation on the US, >30 million of them AR-style rifles. If wonton violence was their only purpose, then there was a serious design flaw along the way. Most guns are just used legally.
Pair O’Dime Shift (@pairodimeshift.bsky.social) reply parent
I do the same with mine. The example, though, is having the government regulate cell/computer access based on the prevalence of exploitive sexual media being produced/consumed by others. Should the government take such an expansive step to curtail the behavior of a (relatively) small # of crimes?
Pair O’Dime Shift (@pairodimeshift.bsky.social) reply parent
We didn’t regulate pressure cookers after the Boston Marathon bombing, France and Germany didn’t regulate trucks after several crowds got flattened. There were child casualties in those as well. Recognizing that you can’t legislate the outliers out of existence is part of living in a free society.

Asking Big Brother to express a right is admitting that you don’t actually have one.
Pair O’Dime Shift (@pairodimeshift.bsky.social) reply parent
Why should I, one gun owner out of the ~60 million, curtail my rights because of the actions of one nutjob out of the population of 341 million? The statistics alone make such actions a joke. It would be like regulating all computers/cell phones to curtail illegal pornography. It’s laughable.

Any number of common items can be misused by the wrong hands. The behavior perpetrated by the walking definition of a “madman” should not be used as a reason to attempt impossible and illegal legislation. Personal infringements mean a lot in the face of such lunacy.

I’m visiting my redneck cousins, and they’re showing me their gun collection. The bullet on the left is for an AR-15 assault rifle (the one on the right is a .22 for reference). No one needs this kind of firepower, especially on our streets. #ar15 #guncontrol #awb

I’ve spent several decades reading and understanding pro and anti gun arguments, regardless of the political/social/religious costume they’re dressed up in. It’s easier to just ask someone “why don’t you like guns?” than to read a book that’s only read by students forced to do so for credit.

That’s a hearty bit of pretzel logic. Guns really boil down to a strong sense of self-reliance: you either get it or you don’t. No need to wrap it in pseudoscientific claptrap.

I’m support the theory that the best predictor of future behavior is past behavior. The fact that all the persons who attacked Rittenhouse had significant criminal reconsidered, were part of a group of rioters, and initiated their attack on someone doing nothing illegal all fits that theory.

Given the rabidly antigun research (cough, Kellerman, cough) being put out by the CDC as God’s Honest Truth, the funding restrictions in the 90’s were justified. The political swing of the CDC in the 2010s and during COVID indicate that the current cut is as well.
Pair O’Dime Shift (@pairodimeshift.bsky.social) reply parent
Maybe thinning the academic herd at the CDC who lump 18 & 19yo gang bangers getting ventilated by other gang bangers into those studies is a good thing. Might encourage more focus on some real epidemics, like childhood obesity.
