We didn’t regulate pressure cookers after the Boston Marathon bombing, France and Germany didn’t regulate trucks after several crowds got flattened. There were child casualties in those as well. Recognizing that you can’t legislate the outliers out of existence is part of living in a free society.

We are talking about devices designed to kill or maim; the validity of your argument is untenable.

They are designed to fire a projectile reliably and accurately, but that’s all. There are >450 million guns in circulation on the US, >30 million of them AR-style rifles. If wonton violence was their only purpose, then there was a serious design flaw along the way. Most guns are just used legally.

I am afraid that your argument remains difficult to defend.

I’m not afraid of such a thing. I’ve been having these discussions for over 25 years and recognize that there’s a cultural aspect to this conversation that not everyone understands.

Ensuring children are safe from gun violence is not a cultural difference—it's a fundamental human responsibility. Framing it otherwise deflects from the urgent need for meaningful action.

I’ve run through why the restrictions on guns you mentioned don’t make sense given the ratios of the crime. The more meaningful action I do support involves early identification of individuals who will commit these crimes. Most of them make statements and/or have identifiable behaviors.

With this logic, mass shootings will persist, and children will continue to lose their lives in schools across America.

Mass shootings are exceedingly rare, especially ones aimed exclusively at children. Again, the legal hoops necessary to placate the “never happen again” crowd would require a level of authoritarianism that would make George Orwell cry. The best we can do is attempt to identify perpetrators early.

The occurrence of any mass shooting represents an unacceptable threshold. Enhanced gun control measures are not inherently authoritative.

If enhanced gun control includes the measures that you mentioned at the beginning of this discussion, those would be overturned and waffle-stomped by the US courts in short order. One of the biggest changes in the gun rights community over the last 15 years is a very robust legal advocacy movement.
