Very thoughtful and I would think it will work. My only concern is handling peak storm events. This functions hydraulically as a weir. I recommend checking the sizing for the weir geometry and make sure that it will handle at least 50-year events. If that's already been done, you should be good.

I've been a landlord for bluebirds for years. Their chicks are are parasitized by a host of flies and wasps. Ground-nesting towhees likely have the same issue. It would seem to me more likely that the nightjars are consuming insects with guts laden with the blood (or flesh) of other birds.
