Curious if it's possible instead of going by age to legislate something like a maximum bike speed for sidewalks that would capture both young kids and adults on the final block headed to the bike rack. Like a maximum of a brisk walking pace or 8 mph or something.

And in formal business districts I often worked with their own maintenance folks to coordinate new bench installs around stops, there are a couple on/around ECB that instead of facing the business is flipped around at the bus stop to let folks see the bus coming

Generally though MTS is going to look the other way, theyâd love to provide agency-owned infrastructure since they can keep after maintenance and maintain quality control, but if for whatever reason that hasnât or canât happen, theyâre not going to say no to outside furniture.

I can think of one particular condo building that brought the council office into a bench discussion, and when we said this is near too many medical offices and removal could present an ADA issue, a landscape architect on the HOA board threatened my AICP credential over it.
Pete Casellini (@petecasellini.bsky.social) reply parent
Shelters, on the other hand, are relatively costly and take a lot of work to install and too often just arenât installed at all (see the Sombrita discourse) but the best answer is cutting the paperwork needed to get the concrete in the ground, which currently requires several tiers of approvals
Pete Casellini (@petecasellini.bsky.social) reply parent
Bus benches are easy, and while the bench ads are a little tacky, they pay for themselves and their own maintenance. The battle (one Iâve seen firsthand in Bankers Hill) is residents think bus benches induce loitering and push back hard on anything that might offer comfort to an undeserving person.
