Obviously I share the concern about the environmental footprint of AI. But my bigger concern is about the de-skilling of labour. I worry more about people being forced to participate in a world where we outsource our research, writing & artwork to AI — which just makes us appendages of ChatGPT etc.

Why stop at 32 hours? The reason we work so much is because we have a system that's oriented around profit instead of meeting human needs. Evidence shows we can provide decent living standards with only 1/3rd of our current resource and energy use. We *should* have a 13 hour work week.

I mean it's not a new phenomenon. Marx and Engels published Capital Vol. 1 in 1867 which showed how companies tend to reinvest their surplus into fixed capital (automation, machines, technology) instead of variable capital (labour). But most Albertans don't understand political economy.

I would say that this is more of an issue of capitalism than it has anything to do with bipartisan electoral politics. When laws and regulations threaten profit growth they will be thrown aside by whoever is in power to ensure the continued profit of corporations.

All this to say that we CAN and we SHOULD be getting substantially more from these companies than we currently receive. Oil and gas companies should be held accountable to pay for cleanup, AND we should increase royalties so that we can redistribute the money to fund our public services. #ABLeg

Two things Albertans should know about oil & gas royalties. 1) Since 1970, AB has received $335B in royalties, meanwhile there are $320B (w/ inflation) in unfunded O&G liabilities. Essentially erasing what we received. 2) In 2024, taxpayers contributed $3B MORE than we received in royalties. #ABLeg
