A new update from @environmentaldefence.ca reveals that Big Oil held 159 lobbying meetings with the new Carney gov't in its first three months. That's 355 so far this year, nearly three every workday, often with top decision-makers. Canada deserves a gov't that serves Canadians, not oil lobbyists.

I worry more about people being forced to participate in a world where we outsource our research, writing & artwork to AI — which just makes us appendages of ChatGPT etc.

Why stop at 32 hours? The reason we work so much is because we have a system that's oriented around profit instead of meeting human needs. Evidence shows we can provide decent living standards with only 1/3rd of our current resource and energy use. We *should* have a 13 hour work week.

A new report exposes Canada's role in supplying weapons to Israel for its genocide in Gaza, contradicting claims by the federal govt that it stopped supplying weapons to Israel. For nearly 2 years, Canada has misled the public about its role in Israel's genocide. armsembargonow.ca/report/ #CDNPoli

What's worse is that the Alberta govt is treating non-payment by delinquent companies as a given and including payment on their behalf in our provincial budget. The 2025-28 fiscal plan includes "$25 million per year for surface rights compensation payments previously not included in budgets" #ABLeg

When oil and gas companies are unable, or unwilling, to pay rent they owe to landowners where they have wells, the Alberta government pays it for them. The tab is now nearly $150 million since 2010, Sharon J. Riley reports: thenarwhal.ca/alberta-oil-and-gas-unpaid-rent-2024

Alberta spent $150M in public money since 2010 & $30M in 2024 alone covering unpaid compensation to landowners for delinquent oil and gas companies. This problem will only grow the longer Alberta delays making O&G companies clean up their inactive wells. thenarwhal.ca/alberta-oil-... #ABLeg #ABPoli

It's been strange seeing people react positively to the ICJ's new climate ruling when the ICJ also ordered Israel to take all measures to prevent acts that violate the genocide convention, and yet the genocide continues apace. Without any sort of meaningful enforcement, ICJ rulings are meaningless.

$150M is bad, but it's also pennies when you consider the incoming bill of $60B-$130B worth of unfunded oil and gas cleanup that the government is planning to pass onto taxpayers (which threatens our public services). #ABLeg

I would say that this is more of an issue of capitalism than it has anything to do with bipartisan electoral politics. When laws and regulations threaten profit growth they will be thrown aside by whoever is in power to ensure the continued profit of corporations.

Oil & gas companies in CAD posted $150B in profits over the past 5 years (2021-2024 inclusive). That's profits, not revenue. In 2024 alone, companies paid out more than $13B in shareholder buybacks & dividends. We don't need austerity budgets when we can make polluters pay. #ABLeg #ABPoli #CDNPoli

All this to say that we CAN and we SHOULD be getting substantially more from these companies than we currently receive. Oil and gas companies should be held accountable to pay for cleanup, AND we should increase royalties so that we can redistribute the money to fund our public services. #ABLeg

Two things Albertans should know about oil & gas royalties. 1) Since 1970, AB has received $335B in royalties, meanwhile there are $320B (w/ inflation) in unfunded O&G liabilities. Essentially erasing what we received. 2) In 2024, taxpayers contributed $3B MORE than we received in royalties. #ABLeg
