Joseph Fink (@planetoffinks.bsky.social) reply parent
I would argue those are two very different opinions, but your essay kind of blended the two
Joseph Fink (@planetoffinks.bsky.social) reply parent
For instance, I don't like Paul Thomas Anderson movies. There is nothing wrong with them, I just don't like them. Whereas I don't like Garland movies because I think that fundamentally there is something wrong with them: they establish an interesting premise and then do nothing with it
Joseph Fink (@planetoffinks.bsky.social) reply parent
I'll leave it here because again your newsletter, say whatever you want. But it just felt like a mix of actual criticism of technique with just "here's what I personally like in a movie".
Joseph Fink (@planetoffinks.bsky.social) reply parent
The counter examples you came up with were two extremely broad and simple blockbusters, and a very very heavy and straightforward parable movie. Which leads back to: I think this is just a personal preference against ambiguity in art rather than a critical stance
Joseph Fink (@planetoffinks.bsky.social) reply parent
I guess my answer is: yes, it is possible to do that. Specifically, you absolutely feel the autobiographical experience he was trying to convey, even if he intentionally obscures the real life specifics. I'm not saying you have to enjoy that. But it is about something
Joseph Fink (@planetoffinks.bsky.social) reply parent
Now obviously, it is intentionally made in a way where that meaning is not spelled out because the movie is trying to express the experience, not help you come to a conclusion about what that experience means. But the meaning is there and can be felt in the body even if not immediately parsed
Joseph Fink (@planetoffinks.bsky.social) reply parent
But there is objectively a there there. Weapons for instance, was intended to be a fractured horror autobiography of the director's childhood with alcoholic parents. And viewed through that lens, that is very much tracks as what the movie is about
Joseph Fink (@planetoffinks.bsky.social) reply parent
I mean, it's your newsletter, you can come down on this issue however you want. But with your explanations, it just seems like where you're landing is "I only like movies with One Big Clear Message" and that feels like a profoundly incurious way to approach any artform
Joseph Fink (@planetoffinks.bsky.social) reply parent
If you want to avoid movies in which people disagree about what it means, that's a big chunk of the very good movies that have ever been made!
Joseph Fink (@planetoffinks.bsky.social) reply parent
Not liking a movie that has nothing to say (anything Garland touches) is understandable to me, but it's baffling to me to expect movies or any narrative art to have one clear meaning that everyone agrees on
Joseph Fink (@planetoffinks.bsky.social) reply parent
The issue I've found with Weapons is people have tied themselves in knots trying to figure out what it's saying about school shootings and the issue they're having is I don't think the movie is at all about school shootings so isn't saying anything about that
Joseph Fink (@planetoffinks.bsky.social) reply parent
And on the level of meaning or what the movie was saying: I think it had a lot to say about a lot of things. I found it pretty rich with meaning. It is true that it wasn't interested in coming to a definitive message about those things, but that is not a requirement of art
Joseph Fink (@planetoffinks.bsky.social) reply parent
I'm just not sure how that applies to Weapons. On a narrative level, it had an antagonist with clear goals, who used consistent mechanics that were frankly over-explained, and was defeated using those mechanics. A pretty standard narrative structure
Joseph Fink (@planetoffinks.bsky.social) reply parent
I'm with you that Civil War, like all Garland movies, is bad, but I'm confused by your assertion that Weapons ends with the witch without the narrative of dealing with the witch, as she's revealed 45 minutes before the end and then there is in fact a whole narrative of dealing with her
