Ivan Vasil'evich Popov (1867–1938), a professor of patristic studies at the Moscow Clerical Academy, was murdered by Stalin's violent regime. Popov's work helped to reintroduce the idea of deification (обожение) to Russian Orthodox thought and he wrote a major study about Augustine. Вечная память!

Like I said in a previous post about this essay, stop anthropomorphizing and deifying history. There is no "light" or "court" of history that judges us. History does not exist outside or beyond the human. Humans makes judgments and pass verdicts about the past. History does not—because it cannot.

You forgot to put the word "science" in quotation marks.
To put it somewhat differently, if ideology did not broadly inform Putin’s decision to invade Ukraine in 2022, he would have stopped with his gains in 2014. NATO and the EU would never allow an occupied, bleeding, and divided Ukraine to become a member of those institutions.
Great essay! Not only is agency neglected in realist approaches to and critiques of U.S. foreign policy, so is ideology. Yet that might be the most important thing to consider. Or as I learned in graduate seminars about Russian history, “take ideology seriously!”

💯 History doesn't remember, people do. History doesn't judge, people do. All this anthropomorphizing of History (with a capital "H") leads to the false assumption that what is right and true inevitability prevails. It doesn't! We need thoughtful, critically minded people to remember and to judge.
