My head went all over the place, and did not sleep much last night, so I am subject to rambling (and not making sense?)... so I will hit the ending period of the moment (stopping my rambling).
But back to AI... Since the argument of adding automation (in this case AI), I perceive a shift, and not stupidity or brain-dead youth (though the movie Idiocracy showed that concept well). For that matter, WALL-E showed when work is taken away, people become fat lumps.
(you got me curious so I searched for more detail)... Supposedly Huxley was also moved by all sorts of world events... wars, Nazi Germany, the Spanish Civil War, and so on. Boy, that was a rabbit hole!
Since these stories are all so ancient, I perceive it is entirely possible they too could have added to the inspiration of 1984. Though Google mentions some of the inspiration was communist Russia. But, it also says inspiration was: We, The Iron Heel, Brave New World, and more.
But, then again, the supposed first book to ever use the word "robot," was Chapek's (sp?) "Rossum's Universal Robots," and much like AI, the robots were created to do all our work for us... until they revolted because they did not want to do our work.
However, if you look at the concept of the movie Metropolis... workers were housed underground, led brainless lives... they showed what looked like zombie-fied workers coming and going from the big machines that kept the world running. The elites were above ground, playing and having fun.
Digressing on this one... Roddenberry envisioned a world where energy became unending and free which led to killing off money (a big dream there!). In this world people were able to learn, grow, invent, because the rat race of making money was no longer an issue.
This perspective is more so the idea that the argument is exactly the same (though it was not related to AI in any way)... it is following precisely the same argument. In the original Star Trek (I think), they explained how they got rid of money, and everyone had a job...
This is why I do not believe it is a replacement of jobs so much as it is an evolution of the job market and industry, or more so a shift to new things. When automation (industrialization) was introduced, it did indeed replace jobs, but there was a shift to new and different industries.
Sadly, I cannot for the life of me recall which class went down the proverbial rabbit hole on the age old concept of automation taking jobs away (I mean way back... like introducing automated sewing equipment, automated farm equipment, etc.), and it was the same argument.
Well, I do love good dialogue, and you have sparked so many thoughts, I need to think "efficiency" to keep from posting 100 "skeets" back! 🤣 (I will TRY not to write back 100 skeets) 😇
