Turns out honor, ethics, norms, and customs were not the best foundation upon which to build a democracy.

Democracy doesn't work without the common good. What we didn't have in place were guardrails against the creep towards oligarchy or authoritarianism and extreme economic inequality. We don't have adequate legal mechanisms to fight those who have now achieved power and want to destroy our democracy.
