overhearing people trying to say 'Southwark' is a surprisingly good time
overhearing people trying to say 'Southwark' is a surprisingly good time
Always charmed on my commute to listen to tourists’ attempts at ‘Leicester Square’ and ‘Holborn’. Results mixed.
Next up: the Marquess of Cholmondeley.
Also:"Holborn".
I can think of at least three ways to say that one…
I'm probably using the wrong one
("HO-bun")
“Ho-bun,” “Ho-born,” and “Hol-born” are all valid IMO. Not a fan of “Hole-born” or “Hole-bun,” personally.
I used Hol-born in front of my girlfriend's mother who'd lived in London all her life, and got laughed at. 😕
I came across some folks years ago AT Southwark station asking about how to get to SouthWAAAK? "I was like, you're here lol"
Americans on a podcast I'm listening to just successfully said Gloucester (after a nervous hesitation) and I feel like I should tell them well done
Was waiting for a bus to go to work once and heard an American (Presumably tourist) ask if the bus went to "Edin-berg", driver just looked at them and flatly said "no"
Edge of Darkness (BBC version) Affronted Scottish landlady "You forgot your sandwiches, Mr Jedburgh!" Darius Jedburgh: "JEDBURGH!"
It it like "Suthuk"?
I have this horrible premonition that I would absolutely fuck that up.
Suvvuck
I know how to pronounce it but I still can't pronounce it
Brondesbury must cause issues too. And Ewell.
I’m probably doing it wrong, but can’t difference between Southwark and Suffolk
one as a more fricative f than the other, no?
🤷
One is Suthurk, the other Suffuk
Suffolk, to someone retaining a geordie accent as I do, has more of a slight "-ick" sound at the end compared to the "-uck" of Southwark.
Probably! 😊
