UKICE: Did you ever think the referendum was in danger of being reversed? DC: Yes. I quit politics because I assumed there was basic democratic decency in Britain. I’m in America at the moment and I was appalled at the extent to which different factions won’t accept legitimate election results, I didn’t think we behaved like that in Britain. I particularly didn’t believe that posh, educated people in positions of authority or Supreme Court judges should behave in that fashion, but they do. If they can get away with it, they will. I grew up in Uganda, a country run by Idi Amin. I believed that in Britain that there was a basic decency and respect for democracy. I was utterly, utterly appalled by the behaviour of John Bercow and Oliver Letwin and others.

OK correction - back at work today so looked it up and although Douglas Carswell's parents lived + worked in Uganda for 2 decades from 3 years before his birth, and he says he grew up there, he was born in Westminster, London. Seems his family came back to use the NHS and then returned to Kampala.

She worked as a junior doctor in various posts and then moved with her young family to newly independent Uganda in 1968. Her services as a medic were in great demand, and she proceeded to work for the next two decades in the outpatients' department of Nsambya Hospital, in Kampala.6 Jan 2023 Margaret Jane Carswell | The BMJ
