Same goes for Discworld. I know so many people who read Color of Magic and nope out, never knowing the greatness that was achieved. Or they read Small Gods because everyone recommends it for some reason when it’s not a great place to start. I feel SG only hits if you known Pratchett already.

Small Gods was my first discworld- and while the cover scared me away from it for basically a year, the actual book made me the hardcore fan I am today. Stand-alone, hilarious, humanist - it's Pratchett at his best. Why, which book was your introduction?

It’s a great book I love it. I’ve just heard so many people say it’s the one and only book they’ve read. Personally I started at the beginning but I also went in committed to keep reading at least 5 books.

its all very personal. generalized "start here" with pratchett is a fool's errand. they need to be catered to each reader. I started with TCOM, loved it, and kept going in order and am now a massive fan. but that worked for me cause i'm amiable and like most things. won't work for many, as seen

Agreed. I always hope people are willing to do read more than one book when starting Discworld. Makes it much easier to cater to them.

I know CoM and LF are not very popular, but I have a soft spot for them, especially LF. My first Pratchett was, funnily enough, Night Watch, but I think I gained so much more from going back and reading them in order.

Guards Guards! was my most recent start and the one that stuck. And it was all worth it when I got to Nightwatch. It was a masterpiece of satire. And the new penguin audio books, with Serafinowicz and Nighy as (I think) the Footnotes and Death, are really well done.
