When I see people complaining about 'wokeism' etc, I generally just roll my eyes. But this is extra funny to me: STAR TREK TURNS GARAK AND BASHIR GAY!!! Yes, they've been doing that since 1993, despite certain producers best efforts lol

I have NEVER EVER been able to understand why these specimens like Star Trek at all. The franchise has been what they apparently hate since day one back in the '60s. What ever did they see in the all of this that pertained to that bigoted mono-cell inside their very thick skull structure?
While this guy, in the image, is almost certainly just farming rage engagement, Steve Shives did a video a while back about what conservatives might find appealing in Star Trek. Worth a watch
youtu.be/nNNWWdsEYGg?...
That was very good! Very well articulated and achieved in a smart but accurate manner (imo of course). Basically, those "fans" he is alluding to are pretty confused. Sounds about right to me and hence the reason one finds it weird when you see Star Trek fans of that political ideological persuasion
They almost certainly don't even watch it. They're trying to rage bait for engagement more than anything. Probably best to ignore their little tantrums, they're probably tired and need a nap...😉
Totally agree and it occurs in many franchises with a bigoted foundation on the part of these cretins. The issue is that it's many of them and they infiltrate the very guts of it all with constant hate. But you are correct and it is what I do since leaving Hell (X)... I ignore these specimens.
I honestly don't think there was that many of them. They were just loud... like a screaming toddler on a bus, they're only small, but they sure as hell know how to make themselves heard. Unfortunately, lately, there seems to be more people listening to them, which is worrying 🙁
It's all unfortunately related to the socio/political divide that we have (almost) globally. They believe they're entitled based on opinion without a tangible argument to back it all up. There are franchises that were ruined due to this. Thankfully Star Trek has stayed steady throughout. 🖖
Picture it! North Hertfordshire, mid 90s! There I am, just taking it for granted Garak is Gay and Julian is Pan.... the whole idea of anything else was a bigger shock frankly.
Garakshir is harmless fun from writhers, directors, producers, and actors that love the subject material. They are right about one thing. Every time I watch Trek, I increase my dopamine levels.
I'm entertained by the outrage there. So much so that the longstanding "Xena/Gabrielle scale of gay subtext" is getting dusted off. No wonder he was a good tailor, all that time in the closet..
I don't particularly want to give them an out here as we all know how Andrew Robinson played it in DS9, but they do realise that it's an alternate Garak and and a hologram Bashir, right? I mean, there's probably an alternate Jon Del Arroz out there...
And apparently, according to that prime specimen of hetero humanity, being gay is itself porn. Who knew?
As a straight white male in his 30’s at the time I picked up on the innuendo (almost) instantly and thought it was great to see more diversity. If you paid attention to Trek from the beginning ‘wokeism’ was always there and true fans were better for it. Just my humble opinion. 🖖
Seán. I've not seen this episode as yet. I have one question. What happened between Dax and Bashir ?
Without spoiling the episode for you, I'll say this, Ezri Dax is not a factor in this variant of the Bashir
You can't spoil an episode I have no intention of watching.
and why would that be?
I don't have any interest in Lower Decks. The only episode I watched was the Strange New Worlds crossover "Those Old Scientists".
I respect your choice, but I shall say that you are missing out on a lot of fun.
If you say so.
well, no. we know, you dont
Ok. I like the ship though.
well, no, this comes from our experince of watching it.... and where does yours come from? basically not knowing
ah, then just think of this - multiverse/different versions of characters :)
I'd like to imagine a version of Bashir that's forgetful and bad at darts, but a genius at engineering.
like a swop with Miles?
Yeah that was my thought. I've always been a fan of their friendship and of both characters, I thought it'd be fun to see what it would be like to switch their roles.
Okay. Will stick to the Garak and Bashir I know.
wait, you watched Enterprise and i see you watched DS9.... sso theres more charactors you probably like, you watched Voyager? well theres several from Voyager....
I've never liked cartoon versions of anything really. I just don't have any interest in watching it. I just like watching TOS, TNG, DS9, VOY, PIC and SNW. That's enough for me.
this is not the animated series
Dax and The Crystal Entity are busy raising a baby they bought from from Connie & Raymond Marble.
ah, that itself would be spoiler! watch the episode when you get a chance, all will be revealed :)
No thanks. I've not watched any Lower Decks.
Oh you are missing out big time. It's the trekkiest Trek. Though Prodigy does a good job bringing back the magic, too. It's the sequel to Voyager we didn't know we needed.
Then don't worry about anything that happens in it
Predictable how these people always forget bi and pan folk exist. Julian has been canonically bi/pan since Extreme Measures aired 25 years ago. There's no other way to read his "And I love Ezri. I just like you a little bit more" line to O'Brien.
The only thing less straight than Garak and Bashir: Jadzia Dax kissing Lenara Khan…
Technically, they're from alternate universes as well. Technically, based on that paradigm, there are going to be gay and straight variants (using the Marvel term) of everyone somewhere in the multiverse.
Homophobes are pathetic. Granted, Lower Decks has never been my cup of Earl Grey, so I had to read the comments for context, but this seems harmless. I always figured Garak was gay, but Julian never really set off my gaydar in DS9. But in this context, I see no problem. 😁
The right has to manufacture rage to survive.
It’s so predictable too. They basically had to ignore that even the Berman Era included one or two DIRECT forays into queer representation, clunky as they were. But the point about dopamine addiction is Barney calling Grimace purple. Fascist rage addiction is a thing, darlin’.
Ye whenever someone uses the word woke i tend to find its just someone moaning about something they dont like.
I wouldn't be surprised if this moment was in honour of Andrew's interview where he said he wanted to **** Julian. And there was this sort of chemistry ever since.
Bashir was basically Star Trek's Captain Jack Harkness before Jack even existed.
Wil Riker wants a word
Yeah it's 100% dramamongering for clicks. These people know exactly what they're doing and how much attention it's going to generate due to schmucks like us getting mad. They're just trolls.
I may have been completely oblivious to the underlyings of it back then, and now I have no problem with it.
He's an uneducated shill who's writing for the "slept" right. Anyone who has any rudimentary knowledge of Trek knows where its roots lie & what the message was always supposed to be. I find it especially amusing that if you watched even a fraction of DS9 you would have picked up on this. #IDIC #LLAP
when you are familiar with the subject matter, you realise that people complaining things are "woke now" that they are such tourists and really dont know what they are talking about.
I'm sure Sid and Andrew will be laughing at how ridiculous any of this hate is 😂
thank you for my first good laugh of the day 🤣
Even the actors already turned them gay. Everyone knows they belong together.
"And they were roommates..."
The people who would write articles like that won’t care about the true reality of what you’re pointing out. It doesn’t fit their rage.
Andrew played Garak as gay and interested from his very first scene.
Married couple arguing over where to live? Definitely porn-brain sex fetish material
Sounds like someone was fantasising about it, got their wish and didn’t like it 😆
Jon Del Arroz must have missed the obvious homo-erotic subplot in most of the Garak-Bashir friendship, as well as the romantic element spoken publicly by Andy Robinson and written in his Garak "autobiography" A Stitch In Time.
Add to that the well travelled "multiverse" sci-fi trope and you have the ravings of an opportunist "anti-woke" zealot.
Is it time for that video again? I think it's time for that video again. (Also surprised that LD didn't have this music playing when they were onscreen) youtu.be/ZR1zgRYL530?...
That's not just your inseam he's measuring, Julian!
well, they did and they didnt, they are from a diff part of the multiverse, as well as being a diff part of the multiverse from each other. i know thats a headache, but thats the context
Just like Chakotay and Janeway are banging in the mirror universe. And also, he's the kinky sadist.
I guess they never heard about that first televised interracial kiss back in late 1968. I mean it was only 56 years ago. And Bashir/Garak being boyfriends has been a running gag among so.e fans since DS9 originally aired 30 years ago.
It wasn't the first interracial kiss on tv. More information here; fakehistoryhunter.net/2019/09/11/n...
And it was magnificent! Btw, congrats on an Almost hour ups and downs on that ep!
Tell us you're not a Trekkie without telling us you're not a Trekkie
It is fascinating the lens through which people view the world. Whenever I lead diversity trainings, the FIRST step is have people evaluate their experiences, to see “how” they see. It is fascinating how some people miss what others see so clearly, not to mention the actors who’ve talked about this.
Andrew Robinson played the character as a closeted gay man who was very attracted to Bashir from Andrew’s own words.
They think an animated, fully clothed lizard man kissing an animated, fully clothed hologram is porn?
Sorry, Jon. Garak is claustrophobic and couldn’t stay in the closet.
+50 for pun
