Oh yeah, I pretty much always have frames of Ghost in the Shell 1995 and Black Lagoon up for reference. I even have some of the artbooks of the original keyframes they were drawing by hand. Those artists were wizards lol

Nowadays things are even faster, like using CG and 3D to speed things up. Animators usin every tool they can to make the bombest shit ya see. There's a charm to the grit of the older styles (hence my lines bein crunchy), but I try to use modern techniques too. Everything except AI, fuck that shit...
Yeah I really like that 90's and 00's style with a bit of noise and glow to the image. I know some artists use 3d models and stuff to help with posing and composition but I don't know how to use any of that, I can barely use my iPad lol.
You reminded me, I should try some noise sometimes. lol Also I'm one of those who use 3D as a tool. It's a bit of a learning curve, but it can def help speed things along if you are willing to learn (def not recommended unless the artist is already comfortable though as it can become a crutch).
Yeah I found adding a little bit of noise really softens the image and gives it that vintage anime cel look that I personally love. I don't know what program you use but the default noise on Procreate is rubbish, billows or ridges is where it's at.
I use CSP, I ain't own any Apple anything
