My favorite defense is "They get under Trump's skin and make him mad!" as if his default emotion isn't already irritable and mad.

And please show me ONE way in which his behavior has been softened or ameliorated or modified in any way by people "getting under his skin". Show me ONE person the trolling has helped.
If people want to do it because they think it's fun and a bonding experience or whatever - fine. Just admit that and stop pretending it's activism. Sitting on your ass reposting memes and sassy tweets is not activism.
(I just want to add that the "sitting on your ass" part was purely metaphorical. There is plenty of meaningful activism folks can do from a couch like researching and posting legislative alerts, grant writing, making templates for letter writing campaigns, running fundraisers, etc.)
People have forgotten colloquialism
Exactly - especially while simultaneously displaying total lack of human empathy for the unhoused in your State.
Workers of the world unite!
Every dollar the Lincoln Project collects from liberals is a dollar not donated to Get Out The Vote operations in Georgia or Texas. Ten cents of that dollar goes to making videos that will never be seen by persuadable voters and ninty cents goes to buying Rick Wilson a new house.
The Confederate flag wrap for Rick's speedboat won't just pay for itself
Also...Attempts to get an authoritarian leader of any kind "mad" should be tactical, with thought behind it, as it's generally NOT a good idea to get the person who can easily kill a bunch of innocents unnecessarily angry. Not saying to placate these types of leaders but just...Tactical irritation.
Fortunately Newsom's staff's words and AI slop don't seem to be having an impact. Pritzker...I want to see more from him, but thus far it seems ordering vaccines for Illinois folks DID have an impact on the Trump Admin. Probably because black folks in Chicago and outside it will have vaccines.
tl;dr Getting a "Dear Leader" mad unnecessarily usually ends in bloodshed, so ffs, if you're going to do it, let there actually be a POINT to what you're doing, that actually HELPS people beyond a "heh" for a select few.
Also exactly why that TACO meme was not wise.
You are so right and I still hate they decided to associate a delicious Mexican dish with Trump. Tactically it backfired in the tariff negotiations, and just. It's not funny? I feel like I need to pull down a cartoon diagram that's rolled up and point at a diagram of a joke.
"Set up, punchline. Now remember, in addition to punching up, not down, as you punch up, remember to not hit anyone else while swinging"
"No, that group would be punching down. As would that group. And that group. Okay, hold on class, it seems I need to get my cartoon diagram for 'what a marginalized person is' before we can continue discussing comedy." The above ALSO not being a well crafted joke. But like. There's a 'heh' or two.
