Also not a dumb question. And its not like zulu particularly advertised the blackface bit. As far as i knew as a Caribbean, mardi gras was just the american version of carnival. I was sadly mistaken
Had anyone shown you the Rex / Comus ball on PBS?
No but considering the context of this conversation im interested and scared
Mardi gras night every year PBS shows rex ball. Rex is the oldest / richest krewe. At one point their royal court travels across the street to the Comus ball. Comus can't parade anymore because they won't let black folks join.
Because i grew up in atl in a very problack christian environment and they treated mardi gras like it was the devils birthday because of the widely known spring break hedonism vibes. I moved here for art and worked a lot to get established and throwing blk queer fem safe space events until then
