For what it's worth, Chicago and Paris are basically doing the same thing with storm sewer overflow, which is basically just storing it in giant tanks... There were a ton of articles on it during the Paris Olympics.
Yeah. The story mentions that. There have been some big pushes in Chicago for swimming in the river. Maybe this year? Chicago River Swim share.google/XRMCnv0t4sQX...
I am not going to feel comfortable swimming in the Chicago River in a million years, I'm sorry. 😂 Will love to see levels of pollution get better and for the ecosystem to improve though.
😄 I hear you. The beach at Bubbly Creek does have a nice ring to it though!
I just don't feel like the river is any worse than the lake at this point and I swim there. I'd do it!
Isn't that the name of a whole housing development in Bridgeport? The ones with the flawed structures that had to have braces installed in between the houses to keep them from toppling over?
There were some issues with some of the fancy homes over by the river but I didn't hear about bracing. I don't know about a place with that name but it could be!
Oops, sorry, that's "Bridgeport Village" www.rismedia.com/2007/06/04/r...
Fucking Balcer! A legacy of shit that will never end. Not this development but there's one north of Archer off Lock that has similar issues from lack of oversight. Had some friends who rented a place there and the closet doors in their house opened the wrong way.
Oh man. I live in an apartment with all kinds of quirks affecting doors, but that is just too much.
I remember waking by some folks working on one house and just said a friendly "looking good" and got, "no, it's a piece of shit," in return. There's weird shit with the water too. Not every house has its own meter but the company that was supposed to take care of that went bankrupt so ????
Yikes
Good lord, what a shit show
😆 🤣 yup That area feels so out of place. The Riverwalk is nicely landscaped though.
I'm sure this was a blip, and it will reopen soon... www.ctvnews.ca/world/articl...
This happens in many cities with beaches. I think it happens in San Diego now and again.
I know. It's already happened are our local beach once this year, and I'm sure we will see more. I just found it funny that a day after the big reopening to swimmers, this had t happen. It looks like the big deity upstairs had a heck of a sense of humour. 😊
Yes, but only at four locations and under certain conditions. The article suggests that the entire Seine has been opened to swimmers.
It's the first year. The article says they plan to open many more. There's a lot of boat traffic. I wonder if that has something to do with not allowing people to swim wherever.
Indeed, I forgot the “bateaux mouche.” That would be e great incentive to not swim everywhere. That and the shark that roamed the Seine. There’s even a film about it. 🤭
Never heard of the shark! People are flocking to these swim holes though. I think it's great.
It was a film where a shark got lost and swam up the Seine all the way to Paris. 😂 But true, the idea is great. And even without the swimming, it’s a great way to spend the summer in Paris. I loved it.
Don’t think so ☠️
Portland did it, spent billions over decades but the river is clean and swimmable now
Hard pass
Doubt the 20km swim is going to be on the Potomac
Gross
No more poop in the waters?
No one's saying you have to swim in it. It's undeniable that a clean river is desirable though.
Nope. Nope. Nope. 🤣🤗 You have Lake Michigan, go enjoy it! Have you read the Jungle, that river is gross. Even Dave Matthew’s bus dump a bunch of crap into it. Please for the love of god—don’t swim in the river.
The Chicago stockyards have been gone for over 50 years. They closed in 1971.
Yes, I read the jungle by Upton Sinclair in college re the meat packing industry in the 1800s. Not sure what that has to do with the river today though 20 years ago, DM bus dumped crap in it. They have floating racks of vegetation along the river and now we are enjoying turtles and otters.
It's incredible how much the river has changed. The Chicago River was a toxic wasteland. Now it's an urban oasis. | National Geographic share.google/RFlWzkYOx2oV...
Yes!!!!
Born and raised. Left 20 years ago. I’m jealous.
I have. Times change.
But did Paris do it? Let’s see a report of the actual ecoli counts. Have been at least two days that failed since June according to different article and said they can’t make a guess on how often it will have to close but it seems better then last year.
People are swimming in it. They are monitoring water quality. Swimming in any natural body of water in a city means contending with runoff, whether it's an ocean, lake or river. Making them cleaner is a good thing whether you want to swim or not.
