Nothing gets the blood pumping in the morning like crossing guard duty at the elementary school and having a lady blow through a stop sign in her SUV going 15-20mph while families with 1st graders and strollers are trying to cross the street. 🤬

I firmly believe that crossing guards should be equipped with anti-tank rocket launchers, for exactly this eventuality.
I'm confused by this, obviously running a stop sign in a school zone is bad, but this is written as though the speed makes it worse, what was the speed limit? 15-20 sounds normal in a school zone, the ones I've seen have all been 15-35
Drivers routinely roll stop signs at 5-10 mph and people think it's normal. She drove through this stop sign going much faster. Both are illegal actions.
10? that's just running it. I see people in rural areas roll stop signs at like 3 mph, but not school zones.
In Chicago, drivers view running a stop sign at 10mph as coming to a stop.
Wow, that sounds dangerous, I never see people roll stop signs in cities, and 10 isn't really "rolling"
That is insane, I don't really want to disclose to the internet a list of cities I tend to visit, but I will say their populations range from about 20K to 200K
Indeed. I see it every day. I do not drive in the Chicago. Running stop signs is extremely common. I think most drivers don't realize how fast they go through stop signs. They think they're going 5ish mph, which is still dangerous.
This shocks me, in cities I always see people actually stop
What cities do you visit? I'm sure #bikechi could weigh in on this issue. @aka60643.bsky.social I think you might have posted about this recently.
I post a lot of political stuff so I'm not sure I want to out my location, but I am talking about cities with populations of 20K to 200K
I think there is variation in Chicago. Neighborhoods with better traffic calming have.... calmer traffic. My neighborhood unfortunately has not had as much as some others. But many nhoods have even less. Unsurprisingly, fatalities are higher in those areas.
I don't drive very much. I walk and ride my bike much more often. There have been times when I had very close calls with drivers running stop signs and red lights. A few of those incidents have happened right in front of my house or within a few blocks.
Thank you for your service
Thank you for showing up each day and serving your community! 💙
I thought of volunteering at my son’s school but I know I lack the temperament for it. I’d be screaming at fellow parents, smacking their cars. My BP would skyrocket. The reckless (and pointless) driving I see around children is unreal. I don’t get why we can’t fix it somehow. It’s like 15 minutes.
One thing that I've done in years past is round up orphaned traffic cones. I use them to make bump outs around the school. They eventually disappear but they do help calm traffic.
I do lose my cool occasionally. But I do feel more confident, rapping on windows of parked cars blocking crosswalks etc. Don't mess with this lollypop lady!
Car drivers have no idea what a crosswalk is.
Legitimately think that most drivers think crosswalks indicate the isolated spots where pedestrians are allowed to cross if there's no cars coming, not what they are, which is where pedestrians have the right of way.
Ugh. Makes a person want to carry a brick to menace the drivers with.
I’ve been really tempted to put brick buckets on either side of Montrose by me and by where all these videos are from.
I hear you. Have you tried putting traffic cones in the crosswalk? I set them on the center line in the x walk. They have a noticeable impact. The CDOT flat placard type with the heavy rubber bottom are the best but they're harder to come by.
Those will definitely be hit by drivers going 40 to 50 miles mph all in about one day
Oh, I'm aware. I find the cones up to a block away, often they've clearly been dragged under a car... and that is okay by me. You can keep a stack on the sidewalk with a sign encouraging others to use them. I had about 15 cones at the peak of my collection one year.
Are you liberating these cones from other locations, or?
🎵🎶 If I had a hammer, I’d hammer in the mooor-ning … 🎶🎵
This was the most brazen. I mean, drivers do this kind of bullshit to me all the time. But to do this when there’s a kindergartener crossing? A block from an elementary school? Just revolting. Permanent-license-revocation behavior. I felt bad for slapping the car in front of him.
Absolutely. Hardened daylighting is so important. Illegal parking in daylight zones rampant and much more dangerous than most drivers realize.
Infuriating. I think you'd make a great crossing guard!
Boils my bagels! Entitled jaggofs. I've definitely let loose on drivers with kids present. The reaction from other pedestrians has always been sympathetic. Lol. Honestly though, you have to have some chutzpah to get through to some drivers. I've nearly let my stop sign fly a few times
I think you should be able to legally carry water balloons filled with bright orange paint
Drivers are more polite if they see you walking around with a brick in your hand. Foam bricks get the job done. 👍
I'd prefer to not have to carry any bricks, foam or otherwise!
People have become so rude and impatient and nowhere is it more evident then when they are behind the wheel of a car
It's been going on since the automobile was invented! youtu.be/mwPSIb3kt_4
You should be allowed to throw bricks at those vehicles.
At the very least, mud pies
Something that forces them to realize they weren't paying attention.
She was in a hurry. She’ll get back to you.
She actually parked right after the stop sign! She ran it and immediately parked. I chewed her out before she got out and then she changed her mind and drove off.
I remember walking my daughter to school and our crossing guard regularly having to shout people down to stop. Over two years doing that daily we had about three or four instances where people weren't looking at all and completely blew past the guard full speed. Just awful.
People sometimes got mad at me when I was crossing that I wouldn't proceed until BOTH directions of traffic came to a full stop but we had 2 near-misses too many, they could honk to their hearts content.
Need more cameras
I'd prefer some curb bump outs and a raised intersection. But I'll take what I can get.
(Under supervision) the kids run many school crossings in Aotearoa/New Zealand. They possibly don't grow up to be that lady www.youtube.com/watch?v=kXAs...
Interesting. I support kid involvement. Seems like the crosswalks should just be permanent, no? Ideally, drivers would be compelled to stop through passive street design that doesn't require crossing guards etc. Curb bump outs, combined w a raised x-walk or raised intersection would go a long way.
So, if you filmed it and sent it to the police, could they issue a citation? Would it be legal to put up a sign letting folks know that they are being filmed while going through the crosswalk? Something polite like, "SLOW DOWN you selfish motherfucker!"
Lol. I don't think it works that way in Chicago. That would be great though.
I would think that it would work even better in Chicago, right? eh? non? I mean, they don't like Illinois Nazis and appear to appreciate traffic safety?
Unfortunately - though not surprisingly - The Chicago Police Department is a safe space for Nazis. The @chicago.suntimes.com has a whole series on it. In my experience, CPD officers are some of the worst, most reckless drivers in my neighborhood. graphics.suntimes.com/extremism-ra...
Rats! I was thinking more along the lines of the Blues Brothers scene when they make em jump off the bridge.
Gotta leave that to the actual residents who tend to actually be anti Nazi
Tesla?
No. It was a Hyundai or something
Thank you for keeping our children safe. 🫡
