And what are the people doing to combat it?

Realistically without a majority in either house there is only so much opposition legislators can do to stop any executive sponsored legislation from passing. Some filibusters and such. A consumer boycott against Tesla is having some effect and it seems to have split Musk from congressional GOP.

Yes, I mean citizens. Consumers. Most people want change without action. They gave up their voice to these representatives and then thought they could get it back with some phone calls. People need to face the fact that change will not come without sacrifice, and with little help from representatives.

One thing I do (I don't live in the US) is pay online subscriptions to reasonably fair-minded and non-billionaire-owned news outlets, local and international. In these fraught times not being explicitly fascist, racist bigoted or homophobic I see as fair minded. I'm OK with a moderate right bias.

I want to preserve some small element of a plural media in existence. Even if the content is sometimes disagreeable. Once all the media are controlled wealthy individuals, or are simply chasing populist clicks, then the mind control becomes unstoppable.

The paywalls are a serious issue. Access to information makes disinformation all the more accessible. Average people can not get the least biased facts but they can get the lies for free.
