It’s not the cult that enables ICE and DHS or subverts the constitution and laws. By the time he got back in office, Trump was just a figurehead anyway. The Heritage Foundation wrote the script, the “Supreme” Court is still mightily stacked, there are still majorities in both houses.

If there is fear - as opposed to just aligned objectives - then the fear would be of the people behind Trump, not Trump himself. And that fear would therefore carry on to Vance or anyone else for that reason.

And I am not at all convinced fear is the motivating factor behind everyone falling in line with fascism - many of them are fascists too, or at the very least they are aligned with enough of the goals to hold hands with them. Trump dying will not rescue us. This isn’t a snake, it’s a hydra.
Vance will have a small fraction of Trump’s support at best, and Congress knows it. There are already signs that the GOP is preparing for Trump’s end (e.g., Ernst isn’t running again). Without support, the GOP is fucked.

Trump’s cult-of-personality status absolutely helped him win both elections he won. Full agreement. But once he took office this year and especially after all the shit he’s already pushed through, the power is NOT centralized on him, it’s on the *office of President*. Whoever that is.
The “Supreme” Court is still 6-3, has already immunized the office of president against any legal consequences, and everyone’s already falling in line with EOs that shouldn’t be gilded law. It’s no longer relevant who is sitting at that desk, they’re a dictator running the HF’s game.
