This has been the case for more than a decade. The LCOE of renewables has continued to decline, while the cost of natural gas and coal fired plants has remained the same or increased. That's why in the US alone added capacity has come mostly from renewables.

Abt 85-90% of added capacity is from renewables over last 5 yrs. As costs of battery tech declines, renewable energy become more dispatchable (ie. available at all times of the day). Recently, solar has become cost cometitive w/natural gas plants. They've all been cheaper than coal for awhile.
