I'm trying to be more of a "put clothes away straight from the dryer" person and not a "clothes live in my laundry basket" person but it's so hard.

I became a “put clothes away straight from the dryer” person the day I decided that “away” means “the laundry basket”. I have a near-perfect record now

Same, I bought a set of 5 nice-ish laundry baskets and built a shelf for them to live on, and now my clothes being "away" is just in their basket on the shelf

I don't have enough clothes to fill more than 1 basket, but I have 2 - one for dirty, one for clean. My socks & underwear live in a paper bag hanging on a nail so I don't have to dig for them. 😂

Oh no, I just remembered I have clothes that still need to go *into* the dryer!

You just needed a parent who reinforced the anxiety of wrinkled clothes when you were a child. Do I put my clothes straight away from the dryer? Yes Do I only do that because I have a crippling fear of looking "disheveled" with a wrinkled t-shirt? Also yes

You get to decide what "done" means when it comes to laundry. If putting clothing away helps you feel organized and ready to navigate all of life's stuff, then do that. If giving yourself compassion for the weeks when that's not possible (you're busy, bad sleep, etc) helps, do that. And then...

...if you feel like putting clothes away does NOT help you mentally/practically/emotionally, and/or you want to prioritize spending that time in another way--you're allowed to make that choice too. And you can change it week to week. Whatever choice you make will be right for you.

I go through seasons where the helpful thing is putting the clothes away, and seasons where the helpful thing is being compassionate with myself and allowing myself to devote that time elsewhere. I will come back to another season where put away works for me in time.

(and good luck in your efforts! I hope you find an approach that works for you and is sustainable!)

My current motivation for putting them away immediately is mostly that we've had to have pest control spray the apartment recently and I don't want my clothes that close to whatever they're spraying on the floor.

Nice! That is an *excellent* reason to get those clothes put away. (and condolences about the need for pest control). Then yeah, let's protect those clothes and keep them safe and smelling fresh! I love that for you!

I am currently a "pull clean clothes out of the dryer" person

I would love to be that person but my husband also likes to do laundry and insists I let him use the dryer :/

Same. I've been telling myself that 3 days in the basket is better than 3 months 😬

My dryer’s wrinkle release button is pushed at least 3 times before the clothes is put away.
