I once quipped that the entire reason for the British Empire was because of a desperate search for flavour in food. You can only consume so many portions of mushy peas before either going mad or finding where cardamom comes from.

Where I grew up, Soy Sauce was the only "exotic" thing in the general store. People arriving there from different experiences and cultures have thankfully changed that.
