I’ve given up and bought a sound card. Utterly mad.

For anyone that cares- to get 5.1 or 7.1 audio over optical (SPDIF) the signal needs to be compressed. Dolby Digital and DTS both do that. But there is a license cost and ASUS won't pay it. So here we are.

aaah, so that's why every year I briefly look around at modern mobos but end up sticking with my 10 yr old Asus with onboard optical to drive my 20 yr old Logitech Z-5500s😅

Well, I did get there by using the onboard hdmi to connect to my receiver and bingo Dolby Atmos and DTS:X is possible over that connection- so now I really don't know why SPDIF just doesn't want to play.

So HDMI is uncompressed. Dolby digital live or DTS connect are needed for SPDIF and that is what they haven’t licensed.

Last one on this. Windows 11 is the culprit and have given up. AVR now connected via on-board HDMI. Its not perfect but it works. Life is too short.
