I kind of wonder if people got so used to the way Disney and Hollywood adapted things that anybody making a work actually inspired by the themes and text of the original is so unexpected as to appear heretical.

Frankenstein is an especially weird case because there's also several different versions of the source material. The Hollywood adaptations are based loosely on the 1831, which places way more emphasis on the very act of creating the monster being a mistake, instead of Victor being a deadbeat dad.

IMO, Young Frankenstein continues to be the best adaptation to this day, because Mel Brooks clearly read and watched all the previous ones and he makes fun of all of them. The happy ending is pretty much "what if Victor wasn't a deadbeat dad, and what if the Creature didn't turn into an incel".
