Not being given the notice it deserves in all the discussion of Sen. Lisa Murkowski’s comments this week: Alaska has ranked-choice voting. She doesn’t have to compete in a GOP primary.

Are you listening Sen. Murkowski?

The fear she talks about is unrelated to her electoral prospects. It's clearly about concern for personal safety from the MAGA mob. That is where the attention should be.

She ran and won as an independent on a write in ballot.

Thank you for making that connection for people. Our politicians’ choices would be skewed much more toward their electorates’ if they weren’t overwhelmingly in service to the holders of campaign purses instead of votes.

KT: are you suggesting that the Senator should uphold her sworn duty to uphold the US Constitution? I couldn’t agree more. This is a five alarm fire. No time to worry about anything other than the preservation of our democracy.

She fears not just reelection. She fears for her life and her families lives and she should. She should still do the right thing, but she is right to be fearful that those lunatics will shoot her or her kids or try to burn their house down or hit them with a hammer 1/2

2/2 Stop making her wrong for speaking her truth. It was brave and we should be encouraging that.

She voted for 18 of 19 of his cabinet picks. That makes her partly responsible for this 'reign of terror'. You're very compassionate, but it'd be braver of her to apologize to us for her votes and tell us she intends to organize and resist.

She's telling us that she is not voting her conscience. She is voting to avoid being murdered, and that she's not the only one.

Do you have proof of this? Any sources for this assertion? She voted against Hegseth's nomination. Are you saying her life was not threatened for that specific nominee but all the others?

Yeah, all but the stupidest of us are scared these days. It's her JOB to defend the Constitution. What these judges are doing (or Marc Elias, Van Hollen, etc) deserves far greater praise than Murkowski squeaking she's scared and not expressing the slightest hint she's going to resist.

Sigh. Great have it your way. Let’s just beat her up for at least starting to do the right thing. That’ll help. Have a great day

I don’t wanna beat her up. But if her driving concern truly is her and her family’s safety, she should just say so explicitly. Not only because of the broader political implications, but because it would actually make them all safer (1/2)

The issue is, doing so would reduce her donations and power. And that’s why ppl are upset. Yes we’re all afraid but SHE has some actual power to change things. And clearly whispering behind the scenes to convince fellow republicans to be human is not a winning strategy (2/2)

Erin, she has some serious moral failings. Others have shown a lot more courage and strength faced with the same threats. Others are much more deserving of sympathy. If she grows a spine in the future, I'll be open to her redemption then, OK?

Erin Kelly @erinlkelly.bsky.social

Please. It is obvious and the threat is growing. A judge’s son was killed and her husband injured. Pelosi’s husband nearly killed. Liz Cheney’s life under threat every day. She is allowed to be afraid and to begin to have enough courage to say so. Why would we oppose that?

Agreed. Also politics isn’t for the faint of heart. She’s supposed to represent her constituents and if she can’t do the job then she should stop. It’s not wrong for this to also be true. Leadership is only when it’s easy.

Respectfully disagree. I despise this “speaking her truth” line of defense/cover. She serves the people of Alaska not the GOP. Brave would be to resign, switch parties, but she chooses to be an active participant of the current destruction of our nation.

More states should use it. Also more states should assign the electoral votes like Nebraska and Maine. Elections would be different.

Not being talked about is how weak and whiney every voter in Alaska is. Absolute shitheel cowards as a state. Keep sending cowards who refuse to do their jobs because the state is garbage. Look at the voters that gave Palin and Murkowski and know they have no common sense at all.

Alaskan here - well true, the hard right GOP are doing everything they can to end RCV. Yes, they've lost twice, but they are out gathering signatures again to get RCV on the '26 ballot. In '24 the pro RCV barely prevailed. It is always a close vote.

I agree. If Schumer were smart he would be courting her to join the Democratic caucus. Of course she would lose her chairmanship of her committee but it could be worthwhile since Indian Affairs is not the most premier committee.

Once one non-maga republican paves the way, it will be easier for the rest of them. We are going to have to build the bridge for them, though. If Schumer isn’t, someone else just needs to do his job until he’s out.

There's not really anything tangible Democrats have to offer her unless they are close to flipping the chamber and gaining a majority -- as they did with flipping Jeffords in 2001.
