I'm gonna go ahead and take issue with the idea that one must have faith in a higher power to be a decent human being.

Not at all.
Native American cultures had rules against murder that were not rooted in religions. Society was rooted around tribes where maintaining harmony was critical, murder was seen as a rupture of the social fabric. There was no “Heaven or hell” framework.
Sort of. Native Nations & most Shamanistic societies believe in the Balance of all things. That's not just a Native American thing. However, they often didn't extend that view to other Nations. Ex: The Iroquois vs The Cherokee wars went on for centuries before the Europeans arrived. 1/2
2/2 Native Nations were just as warlike as European & for the same reasons. Land, resources, prestige. But to your pt, murder, rape, theft within a Nation was counter-productive & frowned upon. It put the "tribe" out of balance with the GreatSpirit & could bring strife/punishment to everyone.
Combat is combat. Society is different.
In my Sociology 101 class, it was framed as “Religion is the ultimate form of social control”.
Exactly. I will concede that my opinion on most organized religion is informed by the stunningly transparent hypocrisy I experienced. Plus the whole "ours is better than yours" thing.
