It was probably also helped by the fact that we didn't have The Clown as president. Countries with authoritarian figures at the head did worse and the scars in their societies were larger. The worst influence was probably Fox News, stoking distrust. We had that in the 1920s, with horrible results.
We definitely showed our whole asses in the US during COVID. The every man is an island and king of his castle is what is literally killing this country and its inhabitants. Our individualisms, nativist and tribalist ideals is what got us under a fascist dictatorship and we will all suffer.
And the anti-globalism of our current administration that’s ripping us out of every international welfare group from the Paris Climate Agreement to the UN sells it as nationalism but it’s cutting the cord and isolating us.
There's a stupid saying, but with a core of truth, "America will always do the best thing, but only after it has tried all other paths." So, there's hope. In reality, there is a fascist wave all over the world, strongly connected to each other. We all need to fight that off.
